After reading some of the reviews, my wife and I were ready for the worst. In fact, we were very pleasantly surprised by our experience with the Raquel in early January 2008.
Arriving late after a flight from Paris, our Hotelopia booking was fine (we had also emailed the Raquel directly, through their website, 24 hours earlier to remind them that we were coming, would be arriving mid-evening and giving the Hotelopia booking details).
Throughout our stay, the staff were helpful (Anita definitely the best, most friendly and customer focused). Our second-floor room, though a little dark because of no window, was reasonably clean and our maid, Fannia, made a special effort to welcome us. That was appreciated. The lift wasn't working on our arrival but we are stairs people anyway so that wasn't a problem. In any case, the day after our arrival it was fixed.
We found the breakfasts to be good. Okay, there were a few flies around (as everywhere in Cuba during January). The restaurant staff were helpful and friendly. Compared to my wife's experiences of limited food availability in Havana in 2002, we found the selection of hot and cold breakfast food surprisingly good (as good as in a 4-star Best Western in Barcelona a few years ago). What really made us cross was the wastefulness by (mainly Europeans) other breakfast guests. Why, when offered a generous buffet, do people continue to take more than they need and leave most of it. I felt sorry for the Cubans who, faced by food shortages outside the tourist sector, must be quite insulted by this wanton, totally unnecessary, wastefulness.
Evening meals? We ate in the Raquel on the evening of our arrival. It was a reasonable meal, somewhat dearer than subsequent meals at Torre La Vega or Meson de La Flota, but nicely presented by friendly staff.
As for the ambiance of the hotel? I can only reiterate the comments of others. It is a stunning building, well refurbished and full of character.
Several reviewers have commented on administrative innefficiencies associated with the hotel (and parent company Habaguanex). Our experience was different. On arriving back at Raquel for our final night in Cuba, Anita explained that there was a problem with our room and that we had been moved to the five star (also Habaguanex) Santa Isobel. A taxi (free) had been arranged and we were given a free Pina Colada while we waited for the transfer. The driver was given the necessary paperwork and accompanied us to the (lovely) Santa Isobel where we enjoyed a great last night in Cuba.
Give the Raquel a try, confirm your booking 24 hours in advance and make allowances for this being Cuba. Enjoy!
