This foodie paradise in the growing foodie haven of Vedado neighborhood is only about 3 months old, and yet it has already established itself, in the eyes of ex-pats living there, as the best in town for serious diners. I took a group of 20 persons for lunch, and they all mentioned that it was one of the best cuisine experiences they've had anywhere. And because it's Cuba, at least for now, it is also the very best and highest value in all of Havana.
Whether you ordered Caribbean fish or lamb or pasta, everything was presented beautifully and and the flavors were off the charts. The house setting (including a secluded bar upstairs) is delightful. They obviously put in a substantial amount of funds into renovation of the property (thanks, no doubt, to recent changes allowing large US transmittal allowances to locals who have families in Miami). Although it is an old house, everything inside is freshly painted, with wonderful fixtures, plentiful wine options, etc.
The only downside is that they took about 20 minutes in between courses to properly prepare each meal, and it certainly showed it. So, no complaints about that. The kitchen does its very best.
So, hooray for the new private "paladar" dining opportunities in Havana. Starbien lives up to its name. It is very, very good indeed.
