“Great Cuban Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

Our last night in Cuba we arrived at our hotel without dinner plans. The bellman was quite insistant that we should visit a local private restaurant. We were a bit leary especially when he said it was in the owners home, but we decided to take a chance. We were picked up at the hotel and escorted to Heriberto & Elivis' home where we met their three daughters. It was a wonderfully authentic cuban dinner and was one of the highlights of our trip. Even though it was a small scale restaurant there were quite a few options offered and all of the food, wine and beer was excellent. It was great to expereince a non tourist meal at a local home and to meet a truly Cuban family. They were very hospitable and the price was very reasononable. I would suggest - even if you only eat one meal in Cuba it be here.

“An Oasis in Steamy Havana”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

Our private tour guide recommended this little place and she was spot on. After a morning of sight seeing on foot she lead us down an unremarkable street to the opened doorway of a typically old Havana apartment. Up the well worn marble steps and down the narrow balcony we went until we came to this tiny three table paladar. We were instantly welcomed by the lovely couple who run the place. We were the only people there for lunch so we had the place to ourselves. Heriberto mixed up some refreshing mojitos as we waited for his wife Elvis to prepare our lunches. The food was simple but very tasty- lobster or chicken served with cuban rice and beans. Well worth the 15 CUCs.

“Best Cuban Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

We were hoping to go to another Cuban restaurant, but when we got there, our reservation couldn't be honoured. So our tour guide brought us here. I'm ecstatic that the previous restaurant couldn't accommodate.

This isn't a traditional restaurant. In fact, it's basically eating in the home of a lovely, welcoming couple. While we were waiting for food, we were shown pictures of their family and their children.

The food was incredible. Seriously! A few of us has lobster and others had chicken. Both were done in an amazing sauce (which I will be trying to replicate at home). It came with black beans and rice and salad. The food was more than plentiful and a very reasonable price ($15/person).

Please do yourself a favour and try this off-the-beaten-track spot. You won't be disappointed.

I enjoyed this meal so much that I tried to get more like it in Varadero. It couldn't come close to Paladar El Reservado.

“A wonderful surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

You have to work to find El Reservado. No sign in the street, the numbers don´t match, but when you climb the old stairs (with marble banisters!) after passing through a maze of electricity wires, you find yourself in the corridor of a tipical Old Havana appartment building and in one of its doors you will find El Reservado. The owners do everything and there is room for just three tables. The service is kind and not invasive, the cook is made when you order it and the taste is amazing. A place to repeat and recommend.

“Superb Cuban Food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 28, 2012

We went to Heriberto and Elvis's paladar expecting good food, but this was exceptional. Now I understand how excellent cuban food can be. The price was on 15 CUC's per person.
My shrimp was cooked in a cuban sauce. Superb and plentiful. It came with congree (black beans and rice) seasoned with cumin and other spices - also excellent.
An appetizer plate included lettuce, cucumber, and my favorite - diced ripe avocado you could pluck with a fork. Our meal also included fried plantains (which I had never had before) with Heriberto's own hot pepper sauce. I am now a fried plantain fan. My sister got the fried fish and said it was excellent as well.
The food was so good we went back for a second dinner - chicken for my sister, and lobster in a cuban sauce for me.
The paladar is located in Habana Vieja and the access to the paladar is pretty neat.
You enter the main building, take the stairs to the second floor, through an empty room to the back, stay left and walk down the narrow balcony to the 'third' door(covered with a white wrought iron screen. This is the paladar. Small, comfortable, peaceful.
Heriberto is a very welcoming host and Elvis's cooking is something else. I will be returning to this paladar in future. Hello to Elvis and Heriberto from the the gemelos(twins) Jane and Carol.
