Owner description: What is now called the Old Square was originally Plaza Nueva (New Square), built as a popular alternative to Plaza de Armas, the military and government nerve center. Later called Plaza del Mercado (Market Square) as Havana's commercial hub, Plaza Vieja was the site of executions, processions, bullfights, and fiestas -- all witnessed by Havana's wealthiest citizens, who looked on from their balconies. The original Carrara marble fountain surrounded by four dolphins was demolished in the 1930s when President Gerardo Machado (1871-1939) built an underground parking lot here. Today the square's surrounding structures vary wildly in condition, though all of them are noteworthy.

“Book collectors delight, nice vista”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

Lots of old books and brik a brac for sale at street vendors but not much else. Nice vista and surrounded by interesting old buildings. Certainly worth a visit but not a lot to keep you there very long. Note that it is easier to buy rum than bottles of drinking water.

“Amazing Social gathering”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

A place to share with other travelers and get the insight into the Cuban life and deals. A place where you can always set up a meeting with friends and they all know how to get there. Many nice restaurants and the beer place are amazing.

“Enjoying cafe at the El Escorial”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

This is a beautiful plaza surrounded by the most magnificent buildings in old Havana. I had a coffee at the Escorial, one of the corners of the Plaza. I sat outside so I could enjoy some "people watching". This plaza is very lively day and night. It was a good way of experiencing Cuba and its people.

“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

I have been traveling to Havana since 1994. I remember the first time I went there. It was a dive. Worst public plaza in the city. Now the change is unbelievable. It is beautiful. I don't like to get into politics on this web site, but if there is ever a change in the government, there is only one person to keep in their position. That is Eusebio Leal, the city historian, and the person in charge of restoration of old Havana. The Plaza Vieja is so far his biggest project. He has restored all the buildings on the square, while keeping common cubans living there. In the center of the plaza is a new fountain, very similar to one that was there a century ago. This plaza is a must see if you go to Havana!

“Beautiful square in old Havana”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

One of the oldest and most lively squares of old Havana. Go here early in the morning, to really enjoy the square itself. Also a nice place to go in the evening for a drink or just to walk around.
