The Hotel is located on Calle Colon just a short distance off the Prado..
About 3 blocks from the Parque Central..

I was in room 207 .. The room was clean with a nice TV that received many satellite channels .. It had a shower with hot hot water.. and lots of it.. The sign on the shower warned of 50c temperature and I believe it..
The maid did a good job of cleaning and was very pleasant to talk to.
Breakfast is served on the 7th or top floor.. There is a wonderful view of Havana from it..
Breakfast is a bit basic, with choices of fried eggs, an omelet or a grilled Cuban ham sandwich.. with an side dish.. The coffee is good and there is always a juice and breads available .. Espresso is available to those who want it for a fee.
The first few days I was there, a couple of bus loads of tourist's were staying in the Hotel .. then breakfast had more side options.. But remember this is the off season and after they left the Hotel was very empty..
I had dinner in the top floor dining room one night and was pleasantly pleased with both the service and the quality of the food..
The food was well prepared and still hot when it was served .. I can definitely recommend it for those who are in the area..
Reception always had a smile when I left the Hotel or picked up my key..
Both check in and check out took only a few minutes..
The Porter always had a smile and a "Hola" when ever I saw him ..
Most of times one of the staff was near the door and it was opened with a smile..
Cuba is starting to understand the term "Service"
This is not a top end hotel.. but it certainly is a more than adequate hotel for the budget minded tourist..
It is clean, safe and within walking distance of most of the interesting things to see and do in Havana ..

We did no stay in this hotel since we, as a cuban-european family, usually stay at home in Havana.
Being in Europe, we sent through relatives a bag with some small gifts (CDs, food, drugs, small clothes..) to the intention of our family. These people were staying at this hotel and left the whole thing to the desk clerk, telling her that someone was going to pick it up. "No problem" of course, and our relatives left to travel out of Havana. When our family came to the hotel, nobody with the name of our relatives had stayed at this hotel (they even checked on their computer !) and there was absolutely nothing left for them. Since our family was insisting (many times on various days), they pretended to be offended and angry (how could you doubt on my words and on the computer, etc..).
When our relatives, before going back to Europe, came again to ask whether the bag had been properly delivered, they anwered them that nobody had asked for it !
Knowing that, we called the hotel, which made them remember everything. Unfortunately, when our family came again for the bag, the most important was missing or opened.
We called again and these folks went even to suggest that what was missing could have been stolen by the person in charge of picking it up and even became threatening with my cuban wife ("if you write something bad about us, you will get some problems.."), with tipical racist undertones.

So, do avoid this place !!!

Clean, very central position, close to the museum of the revolution and el Prado. Roofttopp restaurant/Breakfast bar with stunnigh sight of the Malecon. The only bad note, ASK FOR A ROOM FRONT SEA :) we had a read side room and really wanted a better view. Very cheap.

We only booked here because of an airline charter deal. If you have a choice, stay at a Casa Particular - much cheaper ($25-35/night), friendlier, and just as well located, if not better.

Day 1: Bellhop demanded $5CUC for showing use to the room, not bad when the average monthly salary in Cuba is $20CUC; the advertised welcome cocktail was not delivered and the advertised discounts on local museums were not served. The staff claimed to not know what we were talking about, despite the fact that our written documents included these notes.

Day 2: The security guard demands $40CUC from us because 2 of our Cuban friends came by to visit. He insists that it is illegal for Cuban citizens to enter the hotel, despite the fact that the Cuban government has already ended this unjust practice. We give him $40 to leave us alone and to avoid further embarrassment to our local friends (a doctor and a professor who I met through Cuban-American relatives... not just anyone off of the street...). Then we go with our Cuban friends to the Hotel Sevilla (next door) for lunch, where the staff have absolutely no problem with Cubans entering the building...

Day 3-5: We avoid the hotel and stay with our friends.

Day 6: The chamber maid begs us to give her extra money because her grandson needs new pants, this is right after we gave her $15 to watch several small pieces of clothing.

Day 7: The security guard tries to stop us while we are leaving the hotel, and then follows us for 1 block trying to sell us cigars (insisting that he really likes Canadians because he has a sister in Toronto...). We return to the hotel to complain to the manager. Later in the day, he stops us again when we try to leave, insisting that he misunderstood us - that he thought we were the ones who asked him about cigars... We tell management to fire him for harassing the guests. They say they will look into it.

Day 8: The hotel security guard is still there stopping guests right outside the door, harassing them for money.

Day 9-14: We avoid the hotel and stay with our friends and travel, staying at casa particulars.

Day 14: We return to collect our things and check out (it was pre-booked and paid through an airline deal - so we kept the room to hold some of our bags, even though we couldn't handle staying there anymore). While checking out, the receptionist demands extra money for the "gift". She says we should give her $20CUC, We refuse, and the security guard follows us to our rental car telling us that we must return, that we do not have permission to leave... We give him the option of moving or letting us drive into him, and head to the airport.

We loved Cuba, had a fabulous time in Havana, Matanzas, Las Tarrazas... This hotel has a good location, ok facilities, but several corrupt staff members - including at least 2 of the security guards and the receptionists. The hotel advertises that profits from this hotel go to the restoration funds for old Havana (thus the reason we selected it over some of the other package options). After dealing with their staff, however, and experiencing first hand a constant level of corruption and harassment, I'd suggest looking elsewhere. Stay at a casa particular, where the owners/operators will do everything they can to make you stay happy and comfortable. In our experience, they were not only friendlier, but the facilities were far superior for the value. This hotel is only a deal if you are comparing it with the tourist traps that are deeper within old Havana.

  • Liked — It was clean (everything else was horrible)
  • Disliked — Constant harassment by staff members demanding extra money, advertising misrepresents the facilities

I stayed at the Havana Riviera (see March review "Avoid if Possible") and this one back in late February. Park View was the better of the two for location, for no mold (!), and for cleanliness. It's small and has no amenities other than a bar, but if you're OK without a pool and just want a good budget hotel that's updated, choose this one. The staff were very friendly and I'd stay here again which I can't say for the Havana Riviera.
