“Gamble paid off”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

My brother and I took a gamble on this one: we decided to try a more boutique hotel vs. going for one of the main hotels in the city. It paid off. We thought this charming, old monastery was a lot of fun and had character. It was in a fantastic location - right in the heart of Old Havana and near a couple of the more interesting and beautiful squares. We liked our room, the staff and the general vibe. This hotel definitely provided us with a more authentic feeling of staying in Havana and there were some pretty decent restaurants and bars nearby. It was also nice to be close to the water. On the flip side, our room didn't have windows so it was pretty dark and we were woken up by sawing and hammering each morning as there was construction going on on the ground floor. But it didn't start too early so we didn't mind too much. We'd go back again.

The hotel is perfectly located and this is the main aspect to stay there.
Rooms are comfortable and clean and although the lack of windows is not that bad, the inefficient lightening inside the room is a problem.
The environment is unique. The architecture with the interior yard, the staff dressed up like monks and the interesting furniture in the public areas gives you a positive feeling.
However, the breakfast is bad. It is served in a nearby cafeteria and it’s exactly the same every single day. Most of the stuff is rude and not helpful.
Above all, there is a constant noise in the hotel. First of all because of the groups tourist that visiting the property all day long. Since it looks like a monastery it’s a kind of sight. Then the stuff itself is sooo loud! They are talking so loud all day long! They don’t care if it’s 7 o’clock in the morning (and the guests are sleeping) or if they annoying the people having a drink in the bar.
If you find another hotel close by, try the other…

Room Tip: Try the rooms on the second floor. They have less noise.

In a nutshell, a very centrally located casa, I would definitely recommend this to other travellers in terms of location – you can’t get any more central than this in the old town.

It is an old building and looking quite tired but there was renovation work happening downstairs so I think the hotel is being renovated slowly but surely.

The bathroom was looking tired too but overall the room was clean.
The room itself had no windows which was quite odd for me and it was quite dark but once all the lights were on it was fine.

The staff were polite but didn't go out of their way to help us, I found, they provide the basic service but didn’t go above and beyond. The example I have is we were looking to book an additional night (we booked 2 nights but needed an additional night) and upon request, the staff almost shrugged their shoulders as they were full so didn’t have availability and that was tthat. What they could have done is suggest a few locations – I’m sure hotels are connected and must be able to recommend other hotels to visitors if they are full.

The breakfast is served at a restaurant over the other side of the street. The food was good quantity adequate. Staff at the restaurant very good.

We recently stayed at Los Frailles for the first two nights of a 14 day tour in Cuba. This is a delightful place to stay having been a monastry in previous times. It is right in the centre of the old town and very close to lots of the old squares. We were in a room without windows but this was not an issue for us. The room was tidy and very clean with good air conditioning. The hotel is very serene and quiet - breakfast at the nearby cafe was very good. There is a lovely reception area with a bar and string quartet - lots of tours stop in the hotel as it is so lovely.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2013

We stayed at Hotel Los Frailes for two nights in August 2013, securing a particularly good rate on a junior suite, in comparison to other hotels which had similar prices for only a double room. Check in at this hotel - like most in Cuba - is at 4PM, which when we arrived at 11AM in searing heat wasn't ideal, but as previously mentioned, this is widely available information and as long as you go there in the knowledge that you won't get in your room until 4PM exactly, you'll won't be disappointed. The hotel is decorated like a monastery with all the employees dressed as monks - it's certainly a hotel unlike any other I've visited, so it makes for an interesting stay!

The room (junior suite) was large and spacious, with a living area with a small sofa and television. The room has two balcony doors looking onto the street below and it also has an air conditioning unit. This is where my only complaint about the hotel arises, which may not be entirely the hotel's fault, but rather a complaint about Cuba generally. The air conditioning is very, very loud. You don't notice how loud it is until the lights in the room are off and you're going to sleep, which is when you notice how loud it truly is. Our first night, we left the window slightly ajar to let some light into the room - the noise from the street lasted until roughly 2AM and this combined with the air conditioning made a good night's sleep quite difficult. On our second night, we left the windows closed, which helped with the street noise, but unfortunately the air conditioning remained very loud.

Breakfast offered by Los Frailes is in a restaurant a few doors down from the hotel. It's quite basic, but by Cuban standards it's fine. We were given a plate of fruit each, a plate with two pancakes, a basket of bread, a plate of eggs of your choice each and a coffee. There was also cereals available, which we didn't have.

In terms of the hotel's location, it doesn't get much better for Old Havana. It's literally less than a minutes walk to both Plaza Vieja and Plaza de San Francisco. The cathedral and it's accompanying plaza can be reached in less than five minutes walking. From Plaza de San Francisco it costs 5 CUC for a coco taxi to the Capitol Building, so this hotel is really the perfect location for a base to explore Havana.

The service we received in the hotel was impeccable. In particular, we dealt with Rene upon check-in and with all of our enquiries, and the service he gave was excellent - knowledgeable about the local area and very pleasant - I doubt the hotel could ask much more from their staff, particularly Rene who was a credit to the hotel.

Overall, the value for money and service received in this hotel make it a brilliant choice for Old Havana. The junior suites provide great value for money and the service from staff in this hotel make it an obvious choice for a great hotel in Havana.

Room Tip: Junior suites face onto the street, therefore they have windows, which the double rooms lack.

This small but very cozy hotel is placed at the best location in Havana. All squares are at walking distance. The room was nicely decorated exactly in the style of a monastry. Hotel employees are very friendly and the breakfast in the restaurant across the street (included in the hotel fee) is excellent.
