We were in Havana for five nights the end of December to the beginning of January, 2008. We were supposed to stay at Los Frailes for the full five nights, but as I've read in many other reviews, it didn't happen that way.
We booked our stay through Nash Travel in Canada. My experience with Nash Travel wasn't a positive one. They were rude, unhelpful, and never returned a single phone call. Either way, I arrived with my voucher to Los Frailes to have reception tell me that they had no reservation for us, even though I had the voucher to show the dates and that it was paid for. After about an hour, they figured out the problem. The hotel was originally booked for the week prior, but was then changed to the week we arrived. The hotel eventually found the second email from our travel agent showing the change, which was somehow missed from many months ago. The hotel acknowledged the mistake, but had no rooms available. They arranged for us to go to two different hotels for our stay, and after another hour, we finally were on our way to the first of two hotels.
Los Frailes booked us at Armadores de Santander for two nights, and then to Presidente for the remainder. We enjoyed the Santander, which was in walking distance to Los Frailes, but they only had two nights available. Los Frailes paid for our cab to the Presidente in New Havana, and neither the hotel nor the area had any charm. Thankfully, Los Frailes called us at the Presidente soon after we arrived, and told us that they had an opening for the next two nights. So after one night at the Presidente, Los Frailes paid for our cab back.
Los Frailes gave us the suite, which I assume was larger than the other rooms. We had two double french doors that opened onto a small balcony overlooking the street. The doors were nice, because there are no windows and the rooms are very dark. However, the rooms are quiet, clean, and had a lot of character. The hotel was an interesting place and was very beautiful. Breakfast was in the cafe across the street. This was the only hotel that we stayed in that didn't offer us a welcome drink, although the hotel did give us a bottle of wine on our last night to apologize for the trouble.
Even though our stay started out on the negative side, it was fun to stay at a few different places. I would recommend this hotel because of its character, location, and cleanliness. Although there are tours and a lot of people checking the place out, it is still quiet. The hotel is in walking distance to everything. I had a hard time with the food in Havana, the constant ham and cheese sandwiches on white bread, but it is a poor country, and it's all part of the experience. The people are great, and Havana is a place to see.
