We stayed in this hotel for three nights in mid March prior going to Varadero. We found that three nights in Havana were too many and two days would be plenty to see the famous places.
When we first arrived (late at night, vey tired and exhausted) I was really impressed with the character and atmosphere of the building as it is old converted monastery which I noticed later was a tourist attraction itself as the hotel is located in a very good location in the Old Havana. At the time of our stay there were a lot of road work going on but this did not spoil our holiday in Havana we just took extra care when walking on the street.
Our room was nice, clean and kept tidy throughout our stay (no windows though). In addition to this it had a great character: old furniture, nice bathroom. The room has got a safe and mini bar but you have to pay for it extra. There were two single beds which was very awkward for a couple but as we thought we were staying here only for a few days we did not bother to complain. However on our last day we had no water and had a blocked toilet, when we reported it to the reception they just promised to sort it out but never bothered as they knew we were checking out in a couple of hours. So to flush the toilet we used a bin as a bucket!
The hotel has a little bar downstairs which does make lovely mojitos but we haven't received a complimentary one like some people mentioned in their reviews. Opposite we were always asked to pay. I think it would be a nice gesture from the hotel to offer a complimentary drink on their guests arrival or departure especially after a 10.5 hrs flight or like in our occasion we waited for a transfer to Varadero for 3 hours and the hotel staff were very aware but never offered support (i.e. make a phone call or offer a drink) unless you ask! I was also asked to pay for using a toilet downstairs as we have already check out.
Our stay included breakfast at the restaurant across the road as the hotel haven't got one. Please don't get me wrong I am not a 'posh' person at all but breakfast offered was very poor quality with minimal choice (tiny slices of a few pieces of fruit, fried egg or omelette, out of date bread, one choice of fruit juice, tea, coffee). I received cold coffee and when I complained the waitress facial impression showed that I am asking her too much! Only the last day of our stay I found out that they do cereal (as I fed up of omelette) but this was never offered to me and I only found out it by seeing another person helping himself to the cereal.
As I mentioned above the cleanliness of the hotel was good and the maiden of our room was lovely but you will definitely know when maidens are around as you can hear them talking loudly, banging early in the morning (approx 7am) which always disturbed our sleep.
To sum up Los Frailes hotel character (being an old monastery) left to me a good impression but only to stay for a very short period (1-2 days). However Havana was brilliant and the location of the hotel is definitely a bonus.
