Before you read the rest of this review you must keep in mind that I stayed 8 nights for $520 after taxes including flight. Needless to say my expectations were very low.
**there are a few hints at the bottom if you are interested.
I have some experience with central America and Caribbean all inclusive vacations. The hotel and general facilities are on par with others "high end" resorts I have stayed at. The food is not.
I talked to a couple who has gone every year for 5 years and they have noticed the food slipping slightly every year. That being said, the breakfast is similar to what you would expect at a breakfast buffet in North America. Every other meal was sub par but I was always able to find something to fill my plate after a few trips to the buffet.
Drinks, as always, are a bit strong to start but the bartenders get to know you and pour it to your liking eventually. For some reason they just can't figure out how to make a proper piña colada. All else is fine and the coffee is superb.
The pool is saltwater, beautiful, and thoroughly cleaned every day. The beach and water are also very nice. Shade seemed to be hard to find, so claim an umbrella (or palm tree) early. I have traveled the world over and have rarely experienced water this clear and sand this soft. Don't expect to see tropical fish on this beach though. Also, the activity coordinators almost need to be begged in order to utilize the water sport equipment. If you are really persistent they will take out the equipment and lend it to you but with numerous restrictions,
Entertainment is lacking and the activity staff are not very ambitious. The plays they put on are terrible. The salsa lesons, morning stretches, water aerobics and so on are nearly non-existent. The silver lining was a good salsa band they brought in early in the week as well as a very nice "unplugged" salsa band early in the week. To be honest, at a resort of this size I actually existed far worse and have experienced far worse.
I fully recommend utilizing the free shuttle into Havana as it really ads to the value of your trip. The city is beautiful, the people are overly polite and I felt very very safe, unlike many other places I have been worldwide.
Overall my experience was extremely good considering the price. I paid nearly triple this price in Mexico for a virtually identical experience. If you are not a very picky eater you will be more than fine at Blau.
***Hints***
1)for some excelent traditional Cuban food at a reasonable price as the front desk for a taxi, which will arive and five minutes, and high tail it to this restaurant.
MAEDA
Calle Quebec, No.115, e? 476y478
Guanabo, Ciudad de la Habana,
Cuba
It is open the from 12 till 12 and I highly recommend any of the focaccia. Also black beans and rice are a very Cuban dish.
2)Watch for the cigar/drink scam in Havana. Usually a Cuban man and his significant other offer to show you a salsa festival in the building where the 'buana vista social club' was filmed then they order a bunch of drinks which you have to pay for and are very over priced. Then they try to suck you into buying cigars. The cigars are significantly cheaper and there is no physical danger but be careful.
3)Bring your own beach towels because hotel towels are scarce.
