I've been to Cuba many times. I used to stay in Varadero which is the main tourist destination and offers the most tours and is likely the best place to go for a first trip to Cuba. The down side of Varadero is that there are few Cuban people, other than hotel staff during work shifts, so the place has become a ghost town. Car rentals in Cuba tend to be very expensive and road signs not great so unless you are fluent in Spanish or particularly adventuresome, package day excursions are the way to go. I have been on most of them and there are no bad ones.
The main advantage of the Blua Arenal on East Beach is that it is clean, safe, secure and a short walk away from a typical Cuban town where you can watch people go about their lives. Busses to Havana run twice daily and are free from the hotel. They are comfortable and clean and service is reliable and if the schedule doesn’t fit your needs a taxi is about $15 Canadian, on meter, which for a 15 minute ride is hardy excessive.
Get whatever money you plan to spend converted at the airport when you arrive. Avoid travelers cheques because there can be costly surcharges. Cuba is, as Gorbachev put it, the world’s last police state so you’d pretty much have to work at getting robbed. If you have any extra when you prepare to leave give it away ……….. to anybody Cuban. They will need it.
The Blau is small and comfortable and exceptional value for money. There are not a deluge of young entertainers and it is not as noisy as larger hotels. When the sun goes down some times the mosquitoes and sand flies come out; some times they don’t, so you may be lulled into a false sense of security. Make sure you wear insect repellant in the early morning and early evening to avoid just about the only unpleasant surprise. There are other no special tips as there is nothing particularly bothersome to avoid. If you are expecting gourmet food clearly go for a five star cruise ship and not an all inclusive resort under $1,000 a week, airfare, transfers and drinks all inclusive. If you are expecting world class entertainment go to New York or Los Vegas.
People need to do a bit of a reality check on what they are actually getting for what they are paying. Basically you are paying “hostel rates” ($25 a day) for the equivalent of a mid range hotel anywhere else in North America with free unlimited food, unlimited drinks, transportation to/from airport and Havana, and some of the finest beaches on earth a five minute walk away thrown in. Enjoy your holiday and enjoy your stay at the Blau Arenal.
