“A great hotel for the Tropicana Show excursion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2009

We stayed at the Melia Habana as part of Virgin two day / one night excursion which included the Tropicana Show on the first evening, which was only fifteen minutes away on the coach. It's a great hotel with all the facilities you could want (we didn't sample them all because of the short stay their. The staff were friendly, the food good and varied. The room we were given (not chosen) on the ninth floor was fantastic, we later found out that they are the royal rooms and lived up to their name. It's probably too far away from Old Havana for some on a long sight seeing stay, but I'm told their are free shuttle buses. I would definately recomend this hotel. If you are offered it as part of the excursion package AND are flying out of Havana at the end of your stay, then make the excursion the last two days / night of your holiday as your not far away from the airport.

This place is ok, but as every other thing in Cuba is overpriced. Other than that food is good, especially the Italian restaurant (escala i think). Buffet is nice but, unless you are a big eater or you have it included, i would not drop 25 cus (like 22 euros) to have dinner there. Internet is also very expensive and it doesn't serve higher rooms good. TV has very little channels and can get boring. Rooms are very big with 3 queen beds and a balcony.
Amenities are nice, the pool is big and pretty although it is always full with locals drinking and making noise (having fun), which makes it no suitable for resting or reading. The nights are also VERY busy, so depending on which room you get you might not get too much sleep.
Staff was always nice and helpful.
This hotel is a bit far from city center but they have a free shuttle that comes and goes several times a day .
If i ever visit la Havana again i would book a center hotel, probably a smallest coziest place where i can relax and enjoy and get in touch with the real Cuba and not this luxury wanna be hotels.

Meliá Habana - Hotel in Havana

We only stayed in this Hotel overnight on a two day trip to Havana.

The Meliá Habana hotel is modern and located in the heart of Miramar, the new business centre of Havana. Right next to Fifth Avenue, 10 minutes from the historic city centre, 15 minutes from the José Martí International Airport and 5 minutes from the Congress and Convention Center.
Rooms are air- conditioned and comfortable with balconies or terrace. Facilities include tv with satellite facilities, a safe deposit box, a mini bar (in some rooms the mini bar was locked, we were told to be careful if using this service and to check our bill upon departure.) The bathroom was large with bath/overhead shower. (No plug for bath) vanity unit, loo and bidet. There were some complementary toiletries.
We walked around the Hotel which had a very attractive and pleasant Reception area
We ate in the Buffet Restaurant which offered a good choice of food. There are a number of restaurants in this hotel.
The Swimming Pool area was very attractive. There is a gym with sauna and massage facilities. Also the hotel offers a wide range of sports facilities: Tennis, Squash, Golf, Horseback riding, Hunting and Bowling
The Hotel offered a free shuttle service into the old town of Havana. This hotel offered good facilities for our one night stay. We weren’t able to maximise the facilities owing to lack of time.

We stayed here for 2 nights in May in a Cuba Multicentre holiday.

The hotel was very impressive not just for cuba but for anywhere, the check in took 2 minutes and concierge took our bags to our room.

7th floor Executive Rooms and boy are they! Big TV, desk and lighting and fixtures, nice balcony, HUGE bathroom! and lots of amenities.

Service was better than expected as like you I reguarly look at TripAdvisor and we didn't have any trouble getting served, changing money, arranging tours (Raymondo on concierge speaks perfect english, top man).

Plenty of restaurants in the hotel and a free bus into town providing you book ahead.

Downsides:

Not that many but first of all is prices, not the cheapest to eat or drink and the mini bar is very high but there is a supermarket across the road.

Front desk cant handle more than about 3 people without falling to pieces so be patient.

Location, for us not a problem as we did a vintage car tour and we wanted peace and quiet after a busy day in the centre, but if you wanna walk then this isn't the place for you but bare in mind this is the best hotel in Cuba! if it was in the centre of old havana it would be 6 times the price!

Fantastic hotel and staff and will definately stay here again if we return.

Very good 5 star hotel. Ask for sea view room. Very good view and big rooms. Also you may ask for free espresso during your breakfast. The breakfast is good. Never met before free banana, papaya and guayava shake. Also free melon juice.
Best swimming pool in the city. A little busy during the weekends but very quiet other days. Friendly staff but don't expect "US always with smile face". They are getting $10-20 salary per month.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2009

We stayed here for a couple of nights as an extension to our holiday in Varadero. The hotel is an enormous concrete block near the beach about 15 minutes outside Old Havana. Everything about it is enormous. Huge swimming pool, restaurant, lobby, bedrooms and bathrooms. It has no character at all. That said, the rooms are perfectly acceptable. They are big, airy and clean but most of the fixtures and fittings are worn and dated, especially the bathrooms.

The buffet restaurant is ok and the food is eatable. The service was almost non existant and we waited ages for drinks and coffees.

But we did not come to Havana to stay in the hotel so it did not matter. This is one of the best hotels in Havana, supposedly 5 star, so god knows what the others are like!

Havana itself is really interesting and I loved it.

I tayed at this hotel in Feburary, 2009. The weather was cold, the rooms had no heat. If you exchanged dolars for cus, the cuban peso is called and the only form of reconized exchange, you got 80 cus for every 100 dolars. It goes down from there ! WE were charged for five nights when we only stayed four, checking and out on time, being a Mexican citizen I used my Mexican debit card, it , it was almosucked dry at the rate of 17 to one, I took this up with the manager, and then central Melia in europe, no luck.It seems that they are really out to screw anyone. I have been to Cuba twice before and it was nothing like the last time, the country has gone from honest dignified people to a bunch of ripoffs.
The food ws very poor, the security was looking for bribes more than crooks. You are charged exoribidant prices for food and extremely slow internet connection and everything else for that matter.
I will never stay at a Melia hotel again and I hope this warns others not to get taken advantage of.
