We stayed at the Occidental Miramar for one night as part of an excursion to Havana from our AI resort. It was so bad it was funny - except for the broken glass on the floor, which fortunately my boyfriend noticed before I stood on it. It was right at the entrance of the room.
The bathroom was clean and nice and we had plenty of towels. The air conditioning also worked well which was a welcome relief in the extreme heat and humidity, but it was very noisy so you couldn't have it on the highest setting at night or it would keep you awake.
Overall this is not a 4 or 5-star hotel as it claims. The receptionist was very surly and rude when we asked to borrow an iron and said the ironing service was only available during business hours. This was not much help to us as we wanted to iron outfits for the Tropicana show on a Sunday evening. A decent standard hotel would provide ironing facilities but this hotel clearly wants to make as much cash as possible by charging you for a maid to do it.
There was an ornamental dish in the room that was broken completely in two - I was worried they would think we had done it and try to charge us but fortunately that didn't happen.
There were no tea or coffee making facilities available. The room was very sparse and bare, no comforts at all. They even wanted money to work the safe! We didn't bother as we didn't have very much cash with us anyway.
In the morning we went downstairs to breakfast and it was awful. The dining room was packed and there were no clean tables. We asked a waiter for a table for two and were told to sit at a dirty table with stained tablecloth. We eventually went and found clean cutlery etc ourselves. The food was mediocre and sloppily presented. All the buffet displays had clearly taken a good beating by the time we got there and the whole place was chaos.
After breakfast we checked out and I went to use the toilet before we were due to leave. I turned back when I smelled them! I don't know what the problem was but the smell was absolutely disgusting and you could smell it a mile off. I didn't bother using the toilet as I couldn't stand the stink.
Overall this was Fawlty Towers with hygiene problems. We laughed about it as we were only there for one night and it didn't spoil our trip to Havana overall, but if we had been booked in for a longer stay we would have cancelled and left. The worst hotel I have ever experienced.
