We stayed here for one night at the end of a wonderful trip round Cuba. We chose it due to it being on the right side of town for the airport and would immediately say this review is based purely on the hotel as it would not be a good choice if you are visiting Havana itself its way to far from the centre.

The hotel is very grand and luxurious in comparison to many other Cuban hotels although overall the service was not great. We were literally ignored on check in for about 10 minutes until we had to practically beg someone to check us in. The room was great very comfortable, very modern great bathroom.

We ate in the cafe bar twice during our very short stay and the food was brilliant. We saw the menu at the main restaurant which was a bit expensive but at the cafe bar you can get a great meal for only 5 pesos or so. We did get overcharged once but when we pointed out the mistake there were no problems in changing the bill.

Breakfast was fine but a bit dissapinting considering the overall quality of the hotel-we had better breakfasts in much cheaper hotels elsewhere in Cuba.

The pool area is very large with loads of sun loungers but the water was freezing so only one or two people ventued in during the whole day!

the hotel was nice, the food acceptable and the service good. our only problem was the distance from havana and the frequency of the shuttle. if the information i received was correct the last shuttle left havana at 6:30pm. we would have liked to have stayed to see the city at nite but not want to incur the cost of a taxi.. about 10 pesos or approx. 14 dollars cdn.. i would strongly suggest if you are going to cuba and want to stay in havana for a few days get a hotel in the down town area closer to the Capitolio, you will not regret it..
i went to havana to see havana, if i were to go again it would be to stay downtown.. the city has some restored buildings, it would have been beautiful 50 years ago however it is really in a state of disrepair. we were on the roof deck of the saratoga hotel (kitty corner from the capitolio) and looking around the city it reminded me of beruit.. kind of sad.. people are so poor however everything costs so much for the tourists... go figure.

1 convertible peso costs about 1.33 cdn.. if you have visa you have to go to the bank to get pesos unless, like the miramar, you have a cash outlet in your hotel..

We arrived at this hotel at 4pm after a long hot journey. After a long wait at reception we were informed , with absolutely no word of an apology by the sullen faced receptionist that we couldn't check in to our room for another 2 hours as it wasn't ready. We were literally ordered to go and sit and wait in reception. I returned to the desk to ask more about times and was told with a blank expression that we would be bought a welcome cocktail white we waited. After 1 and a half hours , nothing arrived and I had had enough. Back to reception, same attitude, they then decided to hand me a voucher for a cocktail to take to bar. Another wait before we were given a very sweet 'house cocktail' more like a sweet juice, nothing like the cocktails you could buy. Back to the desk again to see if keys were ready. The key was then just pushed over the counter to me with not one civil word. No-one offered to help with the cases, we went up the room to find we had been allocated one with just a single bed. Back down to reception, room sorted finally. NO smile, no kind word, no apology just sullen arrogance. To say we were not impressed would be an understatement.
That said the final room was very nice and the bathroom lovely.
Every day we recieved an 'essay' from the chambermaid basically wishing us a wonderful stay, a long and happy life, a sucessful professional life, good luck for the future, and every other good wish. - ironically we met said chambermaid on the final morning having left out various gifts for her, and she couldn't speak a word of English. This really did feel like another cuban effort to get more money out of us, and obviously was not a bit genuine.
the pool area was very nice and the staff there made up for the internal staff.
Do not go to the 'concierge'for restaurant advice. We asked for recommendations for a local restaurant preferably which would serve fish. We were assured that we could walk in 5 minutes to the one recommended. We duly set off, not a good experience. It was really dark , took 25 minutes, and was down a very dodgy looking road. When we arrived there was no sign of life. Locked gates surrounded it, even though we had been told it was booked for us. We finally got in, to find no one else there, no signs whatsoever of any food preparation, just a few empty tables and four men hovering around. These were not salubrious surroundings!. We asked for a menu, and quite obviously it was a rip off, even a starter was £20. We said we wanted to leave, and I was extremely anxious as we had to get out of the now locked again gates, it all felt very sinister - we then legged it back to the hotel, and paid for the proper cocktails! Not a good experience!!!!!

We went to Occidental Miramar for our honeymoon and very pleased with the hotel room and restaurants. The staff was amazing, very helpful and fun. Espicially the switchboard lady who helped me a lot when i was trying to call my parents in Turkey. The entertainment was also very nice. Would love to go there again especially to have their lovely breakfast.
