It is beyond me how this hotel can be rated lower than Hostal Valencia and Hostal Comendador.
I started my stay in Cuba as the Comendador, then moved to Valencia (they are basically the same hotel). After being cheated and huzzled and invaded by cockroaches in the Valencia, I litterally escaped and moved to Hotel Telegrafo.
The Telegrafo is a wonderful hotel in the best location in Havana. I recommend it to everyone. Vlean, bright rooms and very nice staff.
Stayed here for 3 nights in June and had a great time. Hotel is in fantastic location, close enough to walk into Old Havana and near to the Cigar factory as well as the Capitolo. When we arrived the welcome at reception was not very warm to say the least however our room was great, very spacious, high ceilings, very clean etc. Lovley view of the square infront of the hotel. We got good recommendations of places to eat from the hotel, they also booked us into some restaurants and were very helpful. The Food was good, not fantastic, however seeing as its only breakfast you can live with it and the food in Cuba is not fantastic full stop! Hotel has nice area to sit out and enjoy a Mojito watching the fantastic old American cars. Would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone going to Havana.
My girlfirend and I stayed at this hotel for four nights between May 23 - 27, 2007. The hotel is what we expected because I researched it online before booking the rooms. It's a relatively small, very quaint boutique hotel across from Central Park in old Havana, it is probably one of the best places to stay in old Havana. The hotel was built in the late 1800s and completely renovated 2 years ago. Service at the hotel is friendly and prompt. Food in the snack bar isn't very good, however, it didn't seem to be very good almost anywhere in Havana. If you like to stay in a place that is comfortable, well located, within walking distance of almost all the major tourist attractions in Havana and that has history, charm and all the basic comforts one would expect, this is a very good option, I would stay there again if I return to Havana.
This was my third visit to Cuba and third stay at the Telgrafo, which says it all really.
It's not in the top league of Havana's hotels, but it is more authentically Cuban than the dearer places. And it has a fantastic location next to Parque Central, plus some very impressive decor in the lobby, bar and restaurant.
The very useful mini-bar in your room is basic but all drinks are around 3 pesos only. The room safe is free - which is far from the case everywhere.
There's a lovely little French cafe on the square a few doors away, which is great for having lunch in, there's the roof bar of the Hotel Inglaterra just beyond that for a beautiful setting for an evening drink, and there's the Sant Angel restaurant in Plaza Vieja within walking distance for a good evening meal (but check your bill afterwards!!).
By the way, we were due to return to the Telegrafo for another night between trips, but it was closed to new guests that night due to problems with the water (not for the first time, I believe) so we were upgraded to the Havana Libre with taxi transportation there. No problems with that!
