We have just returned following a two week honeymoon in cuba. we booked via travel agent and flew with Virgin Atlantic from Gatwick. We stayed at the Hotel Telegrafo for two nights and the Paradisus Princesa del mar resort, Varadero for the remaining twelve (also reviewed).
Firstly the flight, was on time and what we have come to expect as we have flown with Virgin previously. The staff on the plane were not as switched on as they could have been though. We did go to the Virgin Club lounge at Gatwick prior to our flight and highly recommend it.
As we were flying into Havana we decided to go straight to the city before moving to the resort, many do this differently and choose to go on a tour during there stay. If flying into Havana do what we did as it is a two and a half hour journey to the resort.
We have read the reviews on trip advisor for the Telegrafo so thought we knew a little of what to expect. It was far better than we expected. on arrival we were upgraded to a suite, this was not asked for by ourselves and had been done by the hotel as we were on our honeymoon. The conceirge was quick and efficient. The room was very large and looked over the bar area it was also very clean and was kept this way by the cleaner.
The bar area was lovely, staff efficient and helpful. One thing we discovered is everyone has there own mojito recipe however we had some of our best ones at the hotel bar certainly better than the Ambus Mundos where Hemmingway enjoyed his!.
Breakfast was good, yes as mentioned it can be a little different but the main thing is the quality was good. they will also cook you eggs to order as you like and these are excellent. we did not eat at the hotel during the evening or day but the burgers looked great and we spoke to another couple who had their evening meal there and they said it was excellent.
in general the hotel was very good the only problem was trying to use the internet we were told we couldn't even though others were, strange!! we saw into the smaller rooms when the cleaners were about and these looked good. others have mentioned problems with safes in the rooms ours was brand new and you had to enter your own code every time you left it. we did not have a problem and would suggest the hotel have replaced them due to the other complaints.
We did visit the Park Central hotel across the road to change money this was much bigger and also looked very nice. we would use this if we visited again but only because we discovered it had a rooftop swimming pool!
Havana in general is fantastic, its a little daunting at first, its very run down and very busy. One piece of advice you should really consider is buy a guide book, read it before you go and carry it with you when you are there. The other piece of advice is relax and go with the flow, if you don't you will hate it, the Cubans are proud people and whilst they have little money crime is not a problem we felt safer with £500 in our pockets around Havana than we do with £5.00 in the Uk. we did most of the tourist areas, the cigar factory is a must even if you have never smoked one. the rum museum a bit boring if you've just done the cigar factory! Tropicana show whilst pricey is worth a visit.
