Rooms: We stayed at the Sevilla as part of a Havana/Varadero package and were delighted with the old world character of the Sevilla. The rooms are dated but charming and they are generally clean. The bathroom is a bit of a challenge (shower temp and flushing - one quick flush then a long one seemed to do the trick!) but we quickly got used to both. The housekeepers were wonderful ... I'm still not sure how they made two elephants out of our bath towels. The pool provides a very welcome respite, especially in the heat and humidity of May and the exercise room has some decent equipment when it works.

Location: Just off the Prado, the Sevilla provides excellent access to Old Havana, the Malecon, the Museum of the Revolution, and the Capitolo. Ambitious (foolish) types can also walk to New Havana, though I wouldn't recommend this on a steaming hot day in May. There are tonnes of places to eat in this area - go for the smaller restaurants for more authentic food and better service.

Restaurants: Food at the Sevilla was okay. We ate at the buffet, the lobby bar, and the roof-top restaurant. The roof-top restaurant serves decent Cuban food, but is quite pricey (we didn't try the European food). That said, the view is fantastic!!! especially at night and the staff will open the massive windows to cool down the room and expand the view. The view alone made the price justifiable and the service was very good. The lobby bar and buffet provide adequate food, though many of the choices in the buffet seemed under-ripe and less than tasty. Still, the situation in Cuba must make it very difficult to get fresh food. Service in both the bar and buffet are typically communist.

Negatives: The wait for the elevators (lifts) is horrendous even when the hotel isn't busy. There seems to be no logic whatsoever to how the elevators work. The front desk staff weren't very helpful when we ran into problems with our tour company, but the concierge, Dania, was great. Because the hotel is in a very tourist oriented area, be wary of people offering deals that are too good to be true. Nonetheless, we felt very safe, even at night.

Stayed at this hotel for 3 nights form the 8th May to the 10 May 2007.

Loved the hotel very central to things in walking distance of the old town and the sea. It was a old hotel but I think this added to the Charm. We olny stayed the 3 nights if we were going back again i would like to stay at least 5 nights as there is so much to do and we did no do half of it.

We did the walking tour of havana and would recommed this as it give you a good insight in to the city and the way of life over there.

We stayed at this hotel for a week it is situated in the heart of old
Havana and is with in walking distance of all the main tourist attractions in old Havana it is next to the muesum of the revolution and very close to Calle obispo the main shoping street.

The hotel was clean comfortable with very friendly and helpful staff. The rooms were very large and well air conditions with a good shower facility. The hotel also bosts a roof top resturante that looks out over the city that gives you some fantasic views whils you dine. It has a good swimming pool and snack bar service.

It is a nice hotel although a little bit expensive not for the budget
traveller but if you are looking for a good hotel with a bit of comfort in the heart of old Havana then this is a good choice there are some others in this area that are far mre expensive so this is a good middle of the road choice.

This was a good choice of hotel for our Cuba stopover - 3 nights on our way to Panama. It was very centrally located and so within easy walking distance of the sea, the old town and the Capitol building (a real feast for the eyes - and make sure you pay the extra for the guided tour since you get to go into rooms that are cordoned off).

We had a large, high ceilinged room that had fantastic views out to sea on one side, and across the old town on the other. The decor was very faded - I think it was last updated in the 1980s. And the bathroom probably dated from 1908! Showering was fraught with difficulties in temperature control and trying not to flood the floor. The TV didn't work (not a problem as far as I was concerned). A luxury room it was not. But it had a charm and character that is very often lacking in large hotels.

On the top floor was a restaurant serving reasonable food. It was trying to serve a mixture of French and Cuban cuisine. My steak was excellent. My vol-au-vent was like cardboard. The views are terrific though and the room is well worth the visit even if you don't eat there.

Downstairs is a small shopping area, and a bank. Together with a bar area in an open courtyard where musicians play (and then try to sell you their latest CD afterwards). It's not a cheap bar but then Cuba is not cheap for tourists.

The staff were generally friendly and helpful, especially those on the front desk and the porters.

We spent five nights at the Sevilla in April 2007. With teenagers in tow, it's essential to vary the pace between serious museum-bashing and a bit of "farniente". The Sevilla is admirably positioned -- close to museums/Capitolio/Malecon -- with a great pool to return to after a serious morning sightseeing and a nice musical lunch at the Lluvia d'Oro, say. I wouldn't rate the hotel in the same league for comfort and amenities as the Claridge in Bs As, or the El-Minzah in Tanger: but if you've stayed at either of these, you'll know how nice
it is to sneak in off a sweltering city-centre street and find a really nice, clean outdoor pool waiting for you (with fresh towels, loungers etc.). The poolside snack-bar at the Sevilla was good too, as was the Patio Sevillano off the main lobby. The restaurant upstairs, sadly, is overpriced for what it is and the service makes a snail look speedy...but the view, especially when the Capitolio is illuminated, is sensational. We'd be happy to go back.

  • Liked — Clean, simple rooms. Spanish-colonial decor.
  • Disliked — Ultra-long waits for lifts (elevators)
