We have just returned from our holiday in Cuba (Feb 05). We stayed at the Sevilla Hotel in Havana for 6 nights and loved it. If we return to Havana, we will definately stay there again, no hesitation. We thoroughly explored all the other hotel options, during our various tours of the city, and still were glad that we stayed at the Sevilla. Our room was on the 8th floor, we had a triple (2 adults, 1 child) which was very spacious, very clean and over looked the pool and the city. The maids wrote us delightful messages on our arrival and departure and I was very happy to leave them some gifts to say thank you, as well as a generous tip for looking after our room so nicely. The other staff were pleasant and efficient, the food was excellent, as was the ambience and the breakfast buffet offered everything you can imagine - we are vegetarian and found lots of options everywhere (see below). The bands that played in the hotel every night were amazing, they were even very happy to have some "jamming" sessions with my 9 year old boy who was desperately missing his guitar. The currency exchange on the ground floor is always stocked up with CUC, the gift shops are handy for postcards and the roof top restaurant was simply stunning. We ate in there one night - the chef cooked specially for us (nothing veggie on the menu), the head waiter, Manuel, was Lovely, and we really felt as if we were back in the opulent 30's, priveleged enough to be dining at the top of Havana with all the surroundings to match!
The Hotel location is so central we could easily bob in and out between excursions. It is right opposite the Museum of the Revolution which is an absolute must. It runs down the side of Prado - the main promanade in Havana which joins onto the Malecon (sea front) and is only a hop skip and jump from all the other plaza's famous haunts and other tourist attractions.
We ate at the Parque Central one night (good veggie choices on the menu), it was nice, but not as spectacular or as nice as the Roof Top Sevilla restuaurant (that goes for the food, the ambience and the service). The Parque Central is a beautiful (modern) hotel, which could be in any city in the world. The Nationale is very nice too, but way out of the centre.
We were at first worried about vegetarian food in Cuba (we were told there was none) but there is LOADS! We never suffered repetition, we had loads of choice every single night, there was plenty to eat, and if there was nothing on a menu, all we had to do was ask and something delicious would appear. I personally prefer raw cabbage to lettuce, but there is lettuce too! Infact, I would go as far as to say that it's the best holiday we've had as far as food choice is concerned! There are 3 vegetarian restaurants in and around Havana which is a little reported fact - critics are far too hasty to dismiss the vegetarian options because they are not that way inclined and therefore not as resourceful or creative. However, we found we did not need to specifically seek them out as there was plenty of choice everywhere.
If you want a taste of the real Cuba/Havana, stay at the Sevilla. It's FAB.
