We stayed here for 4 nights in mid July in a standard room (although there was an offer when I booked of a free upgrade to a suite but this was subject to availability and, of course, none was available when we arrived).
The room, although slightly small, was clean, quiet and cool. The beds were comfortable. The breakfast room was lovely, with a beautiful view and the food was good (dish of fresh fruit + eggs - waiter service).
The staff were OK in a slightly off-hand way.
The location was good: on the northern edge of Habana Vieja, near the flea market. There was a roof-top terrace where you could have a drink and watch the sun go down and try not to jump when the 9 pm cannon went off.
Unlike many of the hotels in the old town there was free parking in the street right opposite the hotel.
Although not as old as several of the other hotels in the old town, it had the advantage of having a pleasant breeze in the evening.

The San Miguel overlooks the harbour in Old Town. If this hotel was in Venice it would be very expensive. The furnishings are beautiful and compared with those seen in many of the neighbouring museums. Not a hotel I would recommend for people with young children, there are too many china ornaments around! The hotel is small and the bathrooms are small but this is a hotel that was once a home to a wealthy family in the 1920's (our bedheads bore their monogram, no doubles here) and I can think of nowhere better to really get a feel for those times. The hotel staff are warm and friendly. Breakfast is served in the Grand Salon by your personal waiter and after you can take your coffee out onto the balcony and enjoy the magnificent view.

January 2008. Stayed at the San Miguel in Havana for 5 nights in total whilst in Cuba. It is a small ten room colonial style hotel which was probably a former colonial house. The rooms and the public areas are very stylish. We liked it mostly because of it's location. It is looking over the entrance to the harbour and close to all that is going on in Old Havana (Vieja). All the facilities were excellent, nice room, good bathroom with really hot shower. Nicely cooked food carefully presented. Helpful staff. One word of warning; we liked the Palacio del Artesians just down the road, the music was great - but we were robbed there during an afternoon - from speaking to others this is not unusual so do not be lulled into a false sense of security.

We had originally booked a triple room for an overnight stay at Hostal Del Tejadillo, but upon arrival, the receptionist informed us a room was not available due to water damage from the ceiling.
They offered us an alternative room at San Miguel, 5 minutes round the corner. I was immediately apprehensive, but agreed to the exchange, only if we could see the San Miguel and its room first.
We were not disappointed with San Miguel. It is a boutique hotel, like Hostal Del Tejadillo, which we wanted in Old Havana. The interior decor around the hostal is antique, in keeping with its original looks, which is beautiful.
The terrace on Level 3 was brilliant, just to sit and watch life go by on the street below.
Breakfast was lovely, with plenty on offer from the waiter.
When we checked in, we had to leave our passports with receptionist to get checked out (normal practice). Upon returning that evening, the receptionist informed us that we had left money in one of the passports (75 CUC Pesos)that he immediately handed over. My wife had left this in a passport for the Exit Tax at the airport, but it just highlighted the honesty of the people at the hotel. We would have been none the wiser if they had kept the money, which is a lot to them.
There is a little shopping arcade when you turn right out of the hotel and walk approx 5 mins. I think its on Cuba Street, but not sure. It's a little gem of a place with a tables in a coutyard and 3 levels of shops around. We only found it by accident, as it's not really signposted.

Location:
Exellent location in 100 meters from Maximo Gomez monument in the heart of Old Havana!!! Perfect view on the sea, right bank of bay (with old fortifications) from restaurant on top floor. Room 22 has a best view.
Rooms:
rooms are clean, well equipped, good!
General:
Hostal is very small, few rooms on 3 floors, some with fine view. Breakfast is good. In low season I`ve booked single for 60 EUR via internet.
At the end - perfect place!!!
