“PLEASANT STAY, EXCELLENT STAFF”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

Only stayed at Melia Cohiba for three nights, 24, 25, 26 September 2012. The staff make the difference here! They were so welcoming (well done Sally on Reception) and very helpful. The concierge service is excellent. The views are very good. We hope to return one day.

On Oct. 1-3 we stayed at the Melia Cohiba in Havana. We had a fantastic time at this hotel, the reception area was very efficient and professional. They made us feel very welcome at their hotel. The lobby/bar cafe had excellent service with smiles from all of the wait staff. The nightime jazz entertainment was also very good. The rooms were very clean, spacious and had an amazing view of the Malecon. The "Piazza" restaurant had great pizzas and pasta with fantastic service. The buffet in the morning had a great variety of foods. Our 2 day stay at the Melia Cohiba was a great getaway from our 2 week stay in Varadero. Thank you Melia Cohiba for a most enjoyable time in Havana. We will definitely return next year.

Room Tip: higher rooms that overlook the city & the Malecon

The location is great and the crowd around it at night made us feel like we are in Cuba although theres nothing WOW in the hotel. It is a standard one but staff were so helpful and nice with us, Lobby is quiet nice as well.
Breakfast is on one of the high floors, can't remember which floor it was, great view and almost all the options is there. In general it was nice.

We stayed here for the first part of our honeymoon at the beginning of September and had a brilliant time - our room was massive, very clean, and the bathroom was great! The hotel facilities are excellent - the pool and surrounding area are lovely and well maintained, the restaurants are good (especially the Mediterranean which was very good value) and all the staff were so friendly and efficient. The location of the hotel is slightly out of the way of the main sights and attractions but we loved the fact that it was in a bit more of a peaceful location by the sea, and there are always taxis available to take you where you want to go. OR you can use the complementary shuttle bus which goes into the old town and various other locations - we weren't told about this service until we saw our travel rep but you just need to book with the concierge. Make sure you do the evening shuttle over to watch the 9pm cannon show, it's really fun!

The staff are very friendly and helpful. The location is nice, and easy to get to if you drive yourself, which is what I did. The Hotel itself needs some attention, but they were working on it in several places while I was there. The lobby is beautiful. I tried the royal service. They had a separate reception area and it was very easy, and quickly handled. A beverage was also offered during the process. The rooms in royal service themselves are not any different though.

The room I had (Junior Suite) included a very nice bathroom with a large tub. The shower however was within the tub, and it was very deep and had a wide rim. Some people may have trouble getting in and out over the rim. While the room was otherwise immaculately clean, it did have carpeting, which I thought odd given the humid climate. It made the room a tad musky, and the carpet was also quite stained.

The linens were however all clean and in good shape, and even the bead spread looked to have been freshly cleaned. The bedding was nice to sleep in and the room was definitely comfortable.

I stayed at the Cohiba resort last August. Overall the experience was good. The service and the people was excellent. It is shame that the building itself is showing its age. Painting and touching up has not been enough to hide the decay of the building. After 5 night in a room the shower from the room above started to leak and as soon as the maintenance guy came he knew exactly what was going on, like it is a common problem there. Food too expensive for the quality it has, the elevator scary, they started to replace them while we were there (thanks God). I give thumps up for the Lobby Bar and the Security. It was delicious to sit at the lobby and have a cappuccino in the morning. The security was the 5 star part. Those guys behaved as pros, At all time they were doing their job in manner that we felt safe and secure all the time.
Habana Cafe, the cabaret is a shame. Those guys charge you 10 dollar just to get in and then there is no service inside. We got there at 12 am and paid the full price to get in, Once inside I ordered some food and them the waitress told me they were out of that. When I confronted the guy and asked him how come they were out of that he just answered that the cooker did not want to do it and they only had cold dishes. He confessed too me that the Spaniard manager could not care less for that place as he was in a salary, he was not there at that time.

Stayed with my husband at the Cohiba as part of a twin-centre holiday in August. Was delighted on arrival - the hotel is very nice and maintained to an excellent standard. They are also upgrading their lifts but this didn't cause any disturbance.

Reception staff were very helpful and we were upgraded to a corner junior suite, which was very spacious and comfortable. The bed was excellent - I slept very well! Liked that there were bathrobes in the wardrobe - very nice after enjoying a soak in the jacuzzi bath (while overlooking Havana I may add!). The room was well equipped and we had a bottle of chilled cava and chocolates waiting in the room on arrival - very nice as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary while on holiday. The maid was lovely and she kept the room spotless.

The breakfast buffet had quite a good selection and I particularly enjoyed the string trio playing on 28th and 30th - Sound of Silence was excellent! I liked that the music added to the atmosphere but was not overpowering, very relaxing.

The hotel had a few shops downstairs, a business centre, a cadeca to exchange money (or you could change money at reception) and a very pleasant lobby with water feature - a nice area to spend some time in. The staff at the concierge desk were very friendly and helpful, especially the lady on 29th and 30th - I didn't catch her name but she was very nice and extremely helpful.

The hotel had a courtesy shuttle bus that ran into Habana Vieja - this was ideal as the hotel is located in the Vedado area so is a reasonable walk to the old town, pleasant in the cooler evening but quite uncomfortable in the intense heat of the afternoon! The shuttle bus also runs to the cannon ceremony at the Fort across the harbour each evening which was a pleasant surprise - we had expected to have to get a bus or a taxi there. A taxi to the hotel from Habana Vieja cost around 7 CUC (£4.50). It was approx 20mins walk (uphill!) to Revolution Square and perhaps 30-40mins walk to the old town. The best way to get around the city was to take the shuttle bus into old Havana then to catch the opentop bus from Parque Central (5 CUC for an all-day ticket) - this goes by the hotel so its another option for getting back if you don't want to wait on the shuttle.

There is a small shop opposite the hotel where you can buy bottled water, cans of juice etc but the price did seem to vary each time we went in. A better option is the supermarket in the Galerias di Paseo on the corner opposite the hotel - it sells the same brands as are in the mini-fridge in the room so you can use the chilled drinks and replace them, much cheaper than using whats in the minibar!

The hotel does have restaurants and the Havana Cafe, which is recommended by Lonely Planet for evening entertainment, although we didn't try these due to lack of time. There is plenty of choice for food in Havana - something to suit all tastes and all budgets. We found a cafeteria closeby to the hotel where a lot of locals seemed to eat - the food was excellent and very cheap (9 CUC [£6] for 2 pizzas, 2 beers and 2 cans of juice) and the waiters were very friendly.

An excellent hotel, ideal location (slightly quieter!) and wonderfully friendly/helpful staff. On a par with many top-end city hotels elsewhere in the world. Will be my hotel of choice when we return to Havana in the future (hopefully in a few years time!).

Room Tip: Corner suites are large and have great views.
