My husband and I stayed here in July 2008 for a week after booking through Thomas Cook's website as part of their 'local' expeditions. The vast majority of Thomas Cook clientelle tend to spend a short stay of 3 days in Havana and then transfer to the all inclusive resorts in Varadero. I got the impression we were considered quite unusual to be spending an entire week in Havana, however there is plenty to occupy you during a weeks stay.
The Tejadillo is in the heart of Old Havana and occupies an excellent location just steps from the Plaza del Cathedral. It is very convenient for all the major squares and is within walking distance to all of the sites.
The Tejadillo has a very traditional, authentic feel to it. It is well presented and very clean. The bedrooms are large and spacious, some with a kitchen area. Some of the reviews here state the bathrooms are musty smelling, I did not find this to be true. The maid service was good and the beds were turned down with interesting detail.
Breakfast was waiter service in a pleasant outdoor courtyard area. Fruit juice and coffee, followed by a plate of fruit and basket of pastries with jam. You could then have omlettes. I would not criticise the breakfast as poor or basic as some reviews here do.
There is a bar in the hotel where most afternoons and evenings, there is a typical Cuban band playing. You find this in most bars and all of the artistes will expect a tip for their music, most also try to sell you their CD.
There is a local tour rep in reception where you can book excursions to places such as the Partagas Cigar Factory which is an interesting experience and worthwhile, and also the Tropicana Cabaret, which is a must.
The staff at the hotel are very pleasant and helpful. I would not hesitate to recommmend this hotel.
