“Filet mignon....you must be joking!!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

The restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored building in the charming Plaza de San Francisco. The ambience in the high ceilinged room is wonderful. But just do not have the filet mignon. We were advised by our our leader to have the beef and all seemed fine as the very attentive waiter took our orders and asked us how we wanted it done. While we waited for the beef we had a very good smoked slamon salad. But then the filet arrived....all overdone, irrespective of what we had asked for. Not even the slightest sign of pink meat. And it was tough, so much so that most of the party left most of it on their plates. The dessert, creme caramel was lovely and the wine very pleasent. The ever present band was not overloud. A superb opportunity to impress was totally wasted by the beef.

“For breakfast, it is a fantastic find!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

You can stop for coffee anytime, you can have a great lunch or dinner... however, the spanish tortilla (potato and eggs) for 1.50 is a fantastic deal for breakfast! Location is great, just across the San Francisco de Asis church in Old Havana, air conditioning works as a charm and service is friendly. How can you go wrong with it?

“Great romantic place in Old Havana”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2012

We dine at El Mercurio two times during our Cuban trip, and we were always very satisfied.

The place is very clean and furnished like a cafe' of the roaring thirties.
There are good tables outside, but generally available only at lunch, we dine inside since it rained both evening.

The food is good, with large portions and really well presented. Even if the El Mercurio is located in a square with two five-star hotels, the prices are very low for this quality, making it a real value for money.

We tried the onion soup, delicious and very rich, the deep fried shrimps, a huge portion and very well prepared, and a great lobster medallions with chicken, a good tasty dish.

The atmosphere is great, very romantic with a great singer and piano player (we bought their CD too).

A place truly recommended to go, if you want to taste a little of the new charme of the newly restored Habana Vieja.

“My favourite in Old Havana, good value!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

We went here several days both for lunch and dinner, the food never disappointed! The value was good, maybe the best mojitos we had in Havana for 2 CUC/USD. Fish was fresh and delicious, even for people who think they don't like fish. Although, you need to watch what ends up on the bill...

“A surprise in the Plaza San Francisco de Asis!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 9, 2012

In the same plaza as our hotel, we avoided Le Mercurio at first because it seemed expensive and perhaps not cool enough (in July Havana is hot!). One evening we ate outdoors there, where a trio with a flutist played - and had a lovely meal. I ordered a sauteed fish topped with shrimp - a special of the chef - for 7 CUCs. It was a large serving and delicious. Another evening we ate indoors and there was air conditioning! With the AC, a pianist and singer, the ambiance was perfect and the food, again, very good. And El Mercurio is one of the most reasonably priced restaurants we found.
