I went to Club Atlantico last summer, but before I continue, I want to stress that I had a BEAUTIFUL and RELAXING vacation.
When I originally booked my trip I was 'warned' about hookers and being harassed by men if I stayed at this hotel. I really wanted to stay near Havana, and so I ignored these warnings. I should have asked the travel agent "have you ever been there?" because I have NO idea what he was warning me against. I did not feel threatened at ANY time in my trip.
He failed to mention however that the hotel is not very close to many amenities, and this was not a very big deal for me as my intention was to sit on the beach drinking mojitos.
Overall this is a simple hotel with all inclusive features, namely food and drinks and a shuttle bus to and from Havana twice daily. It is obvious that Club atlantico was something in its heyday, but now there are lots of empty rooms probably one used to house casino gambling and performances. There was no entertainment to speak of (and I personally wasn't interested in having any), so if you like live shows etc. This place is not for you. The food was mediocre, however there was a really cheap bar/patio that we went to just a few steps away which sold pasta and pizza and drinks. At night, the same bar featured live music and dancing which I did attend a couple of times.
The area itself is a bit run down, evidence being a shell of a building directly in front of us, and a few other rough looking buildings. Down the street are a couple other hotels one of which was a renovated Russian jail, which apparently is quite nice inside. There aren't any shops per se around the area, there were a couple of convenience type stores. However, the shuttle is available everyday to take you into Havana.
What the hotel lacks in extravagance it MORE than makes up for in hospitality. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel has its own infirmary, and when my sister took ill (no it wasn't food poisoning...it was dehydration) the doctor was professional and responded immediately. The waitstaff were prompt and courteous, often going above and beyond. They made it truly enjoyable.
I have been to 5 star hotels and while there were plenty of activities and people, it just wasn't the atmosphere for me. I much preferred the hominess and size of this hotel. It had a small family feel to it.
Guests ate together at tables, and spent quiet afternoons on the beach, it was very a very pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. Did I mention that I only spent $115 all week? I was amazed. I bought liquor, souvenirs, food, drinks, gifts for myself at the market, it was fantastic to come back from a vacation with dough. Take little toiletries like shampoo and toothpaste to give the staff...they really appreciate it and a little goes a long way.
