We stayed in the Hotel duiring Hurricane Wilma so the weather was not great but the Hotel was fine. The staff were as helpful as any we have met elsewhere (and are not always trying to make money out of you, which seems to be the norm over here!).
The hotel is supposedly well known among the locals as that of choice for the business men, at least in the past, and therefore is possibly not the best place to say you are staying if you don´t want to be hassled for money (we have been told to always say you are in a private house 'casa particular', as all the hotels are government owned and run and therefore not liked by most of the locals).
The Hotel is well located with sea views from most rooms, it is not 4 star by british standards, but in Cuba it seems to be one of the better ones this side of the City. Its relatively small with a cosy atmosphere as suppose to the bigger grand hotels. If you are looking for one of the old fashion grand hotels that you will find in the old town this may not be for you, but as a safe bet at relatively low cost this place is fine. We paid 40 sterling per night which is cheaper than if you book over here.
One final point, if you have read that you need to bring dollars, don't!!!!
Bring sterling or euros, no one will take the dollars and if you want to exchange them they will charge 20% commission!
