Overall, perfectly satisfactory.

Room: large, light. Shower: lots of hot water and good pressure.
Beds: OK, pillows thin, but extra blanket serves as pillow.

Breakfast: this was a really good surprise, reasonable cooked choice (no bacon!), good juices, fruit, excellent bread. Restaurant doesn't seem to operate at other times. Very good 'Pain de Paris' around the corner for fresh cakes and baguettes.

Staff: helpful, especially when given a smile. Porters on the door less satisfactory, as most seem always to want to sell you some service.

Price: excellent.

We had a basic but clean room with a view overlooking the National (which we later stayed at but should not have bothered). There was a silly small pool at the top which was freezing cold (we went just after a hurricane so the sun wasn’t around) but I’m sure in the sun it would be good. The nightclub at the top wasn’t too loud even though we were only 2 floors down from it.

The service was actually reasonably good as Cuba goes! Door staff were friendly. And we would stay here again, even though we are fussy travellers (check out the pizzeria a couple of doors down, great food).

Of course it is cheaper and better to stay in casa perticular, but, anyway, this is one of the cheapest hotels in Havana. For the money I'd paid I got wonderful service, nice breakfast, friendly personnel, in short, I loved staying there. The hotel is rather noisy - if you stay at a lower floor you hear the noise of traffic, if you stay closer to the top - they have a night club in the roof bar... But if you're young and would rather go to a disco instead of going to bed, it's even better - you don't have to go out to get to a real cuban disco (this club is for locals mostly). And the view out of my window was fantastic! Besides, at day-time they have an entertainer there in the roof bar. He will teach you to dance salsa for free (but don't forget to tip him)! Vedado neighbourhood has everything you might need at hand - ATMs, night clubs, copelias, bars, cocotaxi parking, and it's only 300 meters to Malecon!

  • Liked — Location and staff
  • Disliked — I stayed in two rooms and in both of them I had problems wih closing doors of shower cabins

Had a great time in Cuba and stayed in some nice places. This was not one of them, Stayed here 3 nights in 2 different rooms on 2 different floors. Both rooms were much the same. Hard beds, wafer thin pillows, cold shower with no water pressure.

The worst thing though was the staff. They do not have a laundry service at this hotel. When I was told this, I asked for some assistance in finding a laundry service elsewhere. They were not the least bit interested in helping. They could not care less!

The included breakfast was okay and the person who cooks up an omlete in front of you while you wait did a great job and was very friendly.

I moved out of this hotel after 3 days and stayed after that in a casa particular. Much better and at a fraction of the price.

We stayed here in mid April for a couple of nights and then again two weeks later before moving to the Inglaterra for a change. I would stay here again - didn't have any of the problems the last reviewer had.

The St Johns was less than half the price of the Inglaterra and about the same standard. Basically hotels in Cuba are pretty dire, but we found the St John's OK. Rooms big enough - onehad a side view down to the sea. Yes, the plumbing and electricity is a bit eccentric - but after a short while in Cuba you realise this isn't the hotel's fault. Staff were pleasant enough and we thought the breakfasts were very good - loads of fresh fruit, fresh juices, different types of breads or cakes, toast, freshly made omelettes made in front of you.

I did accidentally break a glass in the bedroom and they rushed after us when we left to say I had to pay 1 CUC for it! I was a bit surprised by this - but apparently glass is at a premium in Cuba.
