In summer of 2005 we stayed for three nights in Hotel Plaza as part of a 14 day tour of the island. During the 8day car trip we stayed in some basic hotels in Trinidad and Santa Clara. Arriving in Havana after a long drive we were hoping for a relaxing stay. THE HOTEL WAS A DRAMA !! The room was not clean, the bed/ matras was 50 years hotel and the bathroom was dirty. Light bulbes broken and airco sounded like a truck engine. Asked reception for other room and were shown two(!!) more rooms which were the exactly the same.
Location is perfect. All major attraction are within walking distance eg. Capitol. Havana is a wonderful city if you like culture and old buildings. Beautiful!! Nevertheless there are better hotels around to stay in.
By the way: Tourists we met (again) in Havana stayed in Inglaterra on the same square and had similar remarks. NH Hotel on this square looked new and professional.
Last night we booked into the Hotel Habana Libre and this was excellent. Beautiful rooms with super views of the city!! What a different world. A bit far from the Old City, but definitely more relaxing to stay in.
