Having left the Habana Libre after three days (rubbish) we went to the Plaza and what a difference The staff are trained to treat guests like human beings, always a pleasant smile and a word with you even the doormen what a difference from the other hotels, the room was a good size and the air con. worked, the breakfast was nothing special and if anything let the hotel down slightly but the staff more than made up for it, and the bar meals were good. Have been to Havana 8 times ,through many hotels but this had the best staff, not gestapo trained like the rest.

There's only one thing to say about our stay in this 4 star hotel ... awful!
We were in fact not expecting to see a 4 star hotel, but not as bad as we get!
The location is excellent, but in the same square we have the Sevilla, and Telegrapho, or if you really like being well accomodated de NH!
The breakfast was a joke! Staff we're completly unfriendly ... well we get used to being well treated in the Caribbeas (Riviera Maya). The room .... well, were should I start? Well just let me describe you the A/C, a hole on the wall (literaly), the machine with 30 years or more (it wasn't so bad, when we started the a/c, we couldn't ear the work that was going on the other side of the street ... something good!), and it was sealed (the junction between wall and machine) with plastic bags, paper, journals ...

The central square is the best place in town to stay, but if you enjoy being in a hotel (3+ star) DON'T stay here.

There was a big poster annoucing the hotel 97th anniversary ... Well it's true! The bad thing is that they stop maintenance 30 years ago!

It is an old hotel, placed in a very nice location as well as NH Hotel or Inglaterra. The rooms are always with a particular problem, such as something is missing or do not work properly, but nothing to worry much about it.
Just think that the Cubans are nice people who are just doing they´re job, they get a very misserable pay and they dont really care if they are improving or not with the clients, because they are noy going to have a better pay for that. But if you are friendly, probably you will get a little more of attention......By patient...

I can recomend this hotel, if you don´t mind to wake up early in the morning because of the new hotel or building that is being constructed just between the NH Hotel and the Hotel Plaza. I recomend to ask for the 4th floor and one of the rooms with no view to the city so you can have some more hours of silence.

Very near is the Florifita, the Capitol, the Obispo street (very interesting) and other atractions...

By the way, cubans told me to walk just in the more commercial streets in old havana, particulary at night where they can become a little dangerous.

I "strongly" NOT recommand you guys to book this hotel. The service was awful! You will be regret if booking this hotel for your trip.
1st night we had arrived, we tried to upgrade our room to double bed room. The hotel charged us more $ to get a large room, but the bathroom light was burn and the hot water was out. We called someone to come up and fixed it at night, but he couldn't understand Eng at all, the reception was not willing to come up for translation & hung up on us. When we called again, they were not pick the call anymore. The day before we left the hotel and heading to airport, a very rude receptionist claimed that we dailed a long-D call to Toronto, but we didn't (never!!)! She kept saying that we are "lie" to her. "Hello?!" she said the customer was lier! What kind of customer service that would be!! We asked to speak to manager, then she pretended not understanding Eng at all. She only had the room # that was given by someone who dailed the call at reception desk, she didn't even know who make that call. She kept asking us to pay the call. We refused it and we were very angry & frustrated by the service. After we got on the tourist bus to airport, we told the tourists about this and we all agreed not to come to this hotel anymore. Cuba is a great place to visit, but this hotel will make your trip not too perfect.
