Because of the swine flu, my partner and I had to deal with several days of cancelled flights so we actually ended up staying at the Hotel Plaza in 3 different rooms. Now when you are paying the equivalent of A$200 per night, I did expect a little more.
The first 2 nights we stayed, we had a wonderful room. It was on the fourth level and it was big. The room was very old fashioned with a big bed and bathroom. It was on the main street and it was loud however it just adds to being in Cuba. I actually fell in love with the place at this stage. The only issue was the elevator kept breaking down so when we left at 4am to catch our (cancelled) flight it was definitely a pain getting our luggage down 4 flights of stairs.
When we booked for the next night, we were obviously given a different room. Not as good as the first. This one was on the second floor and was a great deal smaller. Again we left the next morning at 4am and again the lift was broken but we didn't have to go down as many stairs.
On the final night, we were given the worst room ever. The bed was so bad. The mattress was missing most of its springs and any that were left were poking through. Now I could of asked for a different room however we were very stressed about not being able to get home that we just left it. It was probably the worst night I've ever had. The bed was a very small double and while I love being cosy adding this to the lack of mattress strings, it was terrible.
Positives - Staff are great and speak good english. The bar and restaurant in the foyer are good. The bathrooms in the foyer are also clean and have toliet paper. It's a beautiful hotel in a great location. It has the most amazing roof top terrace overlooking Central Habana where you can have dinner and/or a drink.
Negatives - All the rooms are different qualities so you never know what you are going to get even though they cost the same price. They seemed to always run out of internet cards. The lift was always broken.
Overall I surpose I would recommend this hotel as we did have more good times then bad. I would just be careful of the rooms. It is expensive to stay here and if it is the same price for every room, you want to make sure you get a good one.
Next time, however, I will stay in a casa particular. A lot cheaper and a more Cuban experience.
