We stayed here from April 6-April 13 2007.

Please keep in mind that my opinion is based on comparing Cuban hotels to other Cuban hotels, - the star rating system could not be used to compare a 5 star hotel in Havana with one in New York, for example.

We had a room on the fourth floor, overlooking the Park. The room was clean and comfortable. Air conditioning worked well. The bathroom was excellent , with both a bathtub and a separate shower. The water was hot, with good pressure at any time of the day.

The lobby bar area is terrific, with good service from Anatolia, Glinda and Lisabeth.

There are two restaurants, the Paseo and the Mediteraneo.
Breakfast is served at the Mediterraneo, and this is where we also ate dinner a couple of times. Breakfast is simply put, fantastic, with cooked to order eggs and omelettes, as well as lots of breads, pastries, fresh fruit, bacon, sausage, and cereals.
The staff were always extremely courteous, and perhaps tried too hard to be nice. For example, if two people are sitting at a table for four for dinner, there is an elaborate routine where the staff remove the other two settings, - using thongs to lift the napkins, - just seemed odd.

Food was generally good, - and adventure if you order exactly the same dish on different nights, - it will be different each time, depending on availability of ingredients, and who is doing the cooking I suppose.

Coffee service can be slow, but the coffee is worth the wait.

There is a very nice, well maintained pool on the roof, as well as another restaurant and coffee bar. The pool maintenance staff seem very proud of their pool! Service on the roof is extremely slow most of the time, non-existent some of the time. When I asked one of the waiters about this, he mentioned that he was alone serving on that day, and was doing his best, - although I did experience this at other times where there were a number of waiters.
The whirlpool on the roof was out of order when we were there.

Internet service was not working any time we checked it out, - not unusual though for Havana.

There is a small gym, - stationary bike didn't work, and some of the weight equipment needed cleaning or maintenance, - but overall its quite good.

We had stayed previously at the Telegrafo, - and this hotel is definitely better in most regards.

  • Liked — Location and good food
  • Disliked — Price, - quite expensive, - but so is most of Cuba.

Dear Trip Advisor user and reviewer,

Thank you for the time and effort you took to post your review and thank you also for your positive comments.

Just to answer your few less positive observations to you and all other Trip Advisor
Users:

1. Coffee service can be slow / Service on the roof is extremely slow most of the time, non-existent some of the time.

Well, I am starting to sound like a parrot, always repeating the same thing. I once again took this up with our food and beverage manager, responsable for our outlets. I know this happens from time to time but rest assured it has our constant attention.

2. Internet service was not working any time we checked it out, - not unusual though for Havana.

Indeed we do have our hick-ups once a while with our internet-connections and believe me when I say that this is really beyond our control.

3. There is a small gym, - stationary bike didn't work, and some of the weight equipment needed cleaning or maintenance.

Thank you for your useful observation. Cleaning has immediately been taken care of and we removed the stationary bike untill we have the spare parts.

I trust this answers your observations and I sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed your stay , despite these small inconveniences.

Hospitable Regards,

We stayed here 3 times during our 10 days in Cuba. We had 2 rooms for 6 adults and 2 children. Our first stay was horrible. We were in room 527 and the window was broken and housekeeping took 3 hours to bring us an extra bed for our 4 yr old son. The room was old and it was not clean. We found old candies under our bed from the previous occupants. Then we travelled to Vinales and came back and had room 515 which had a great view of the park and the room was clean. And then we went to Trinidad and back and had room 708 which was fine also. If you need help with cars or anything, the concierge is great - especially Leonardo and Alfredo who both helped us out time and time again. The thing we really discovered about Cuba in general is the people are really what make the country fantastic. The country itself is old and decaying but the people are very nice and friendly and full of life.

Dear Trip Advisor user and reviewer,

Thank you for the time and effort you took to post your review and thank you also for your positive comments.

Just to answer your few less positive observations to you and all other Trip Advisor Users:

1. Our first stay was horrible. We were in room 527 and the window was broken.

Well, I personally just went up to that room to check, (thank you for mentioning so precisely your room number), but couldn’t find any irregularity. So meanwhile it must have been fixed. Anyhow, I brought this under the attention of our head of housekeeping, because if a room has a maintenance problem, it should not be assigned to a guest.

2. Housekeeping took 3 hours to bring us an extra bed for our 4 yr old son.

OK, I managed to trace your reservation details, and as explained to you, the reservation did not mention anything about an extra bed. Nevertheless I agree totally with you that it’s unacceptable and ridiculous that you had to wait 3 hours. So for that, please accept my apologies. Meanwhile we have purchased additional extra beds, so we have them on hand on each floor, which will eliminate the problem of extended waiting time.

3. The room was old and it was not clean. We found old candies under our bed from the previous occupants.

As said before, I went personally to check room 527, and don’t have the impression that the room is old. We are in a constant process of refurbishing our rooms and taken into account your comment, I decided to put room 527 on priority list. As far as the cleanliness is concerned, of course there is no excuse. I was horrified to read that you found old candies under your bed. This is a serious error of the room maid, because according to the procedures, they always have to vacuum under the bed as well. Rest assured that adequate measures e.g. sanctions will be taken in order to avoid such events in the future.

Anyhow, all by all I am pleased to read that what happened to you was an isolated incident, since during your other 2 stays in different rooms, everything was perfect.

I trust to have answered your observations and would like to thank you once again for posting your review.

Stayed in the Parque Central 5 nights at the start of our holiday then 1 night 3 weeks later before our return home. Very nice hotel no complaints , no problems only praise for all the staff in the hotel. Perfectly placed in the middle of the old town in Havana (talked to people in the beach hotels and they said they were too far out). Very clean, nice big rooms and breakfast in the morning couldn't be bettered. Rate of exchange in the hotel was as good as anywhere ,not worth trawling the streets for banks offering a better rate of exchange. Roof bar and pool excellant and nice place to relax before going at for the night. Highly recommended.

We stayed at the Parque Centrale over the Easter long weekend after having it recommended by a few people as "the best hotel in Cuba". Now this may in fact be true (we don't know, as this was our first time there), but it certainly isn't a luxury hotel by any stretch of the imagination.

Of course, you have to take into account the fact that we're talking about a country which is very poor and which is still the subject of trade sanctions with the US. However, given the price (which isn't cheap compared with the cost of living in Cuba), we were a little disappointed by the standard of our room. The bed, whilst large, was the most uncomfortable hotel bed we've ever slept in - I'm surprised no other travellers have mentioned it, but our mattress was like a rock! (and we confirmed this with a couple of other guests staying there at the same time). The bathroom was not particularly clean and we had problems with the toilet not having been cleaned on arrival, and not flushing properly during our stay. Oh, and of course, the view through our window into a massive construction site was not exactly a bonus...

There were a number of positives though - the roof-top pool and bar was very nice, the buffet breakfast each morning was fantastic and we found the concierge to be very helpful in planning some activities. There were some problems with the foreign exchange facilities, but I understand this is not unusual in Cuba.

In summary, a great location and good general facilities, but the quality of the standard rooms leaves a little to be desired.

Dear Trip Advisor user and reviewer,

Thank you for the time and effort you took to post your review and thank you also for your positive comments.

Just to answer your few less positive observations to you and all other Trip Advisor
Users:

1. It certainly isn't a luxury hotel by any stretch of the imagination.

Well, what can I say? It depends very much on ones personal opinion about how and what to define as luxury. I don't claim at all that we are the best hotel in Cuba, but I do consider our current position in Trip Advisor as a more than relevant indicator.

2. Of course, you have to take into account the fact that we're talking about a country which is very poor.

I have read your comment various times, but I just can’t seem to place it in its correct context in your review. I don’t see what this has to do with the hotel? Rest assured that in the whole of Cuba there are numerous hotels which can compete with other international hotels.

3. However, given the price (which isn't cheap compared with the cost of living in Cuba).

I am trying to understand here, but can’t. I really don’t want to believe that you are comparing our rates which are in USD, to the Cuban peso income? That would really lack any sense of reality.

4. the most uncomfortable hotel bed we've ever slept in, our mattress was like a rock!

OK, you might have a point here. Recently we have placed new mattresses in almost all of our rooms and that might just have given this feeling. However, for all future guests, if there is anything you dislike about your room, please let us know and if possible we change rooms until you are satisfied.

5. The bathroom was not particularly clean and we had problems with the toilet not having been cleaned on arrival and not flushing properly during our stay.

Unfortunately you did not mention your room number, so it is very hard to trace what happened. Nevertheless, please accept my apologies since there is no excuse for this. Once again I urge all future guests to inform us immediately about such things. So we have at least the chance to resolve it and take adequate measures

6. The view through our window into a massive construction site was not exactly a bonus...

Yes, I can agree with you. I already once posted a response in which I gave an extensive explanation why this might happen. Pls see my response posted to a review of last Feb. 17th, which is titled “Building works”.

I trust this answers your observations and I sincerely hope you’ve enjoyed your stay in Havana, despite these small inconveniences.

I can agree with the majority of the content in the positive reviews given by guests. It is a fantastic hotel - good food for Cuba, very clean, very comfortable, internet access etc. However a word of caution to watch your personal belongings. I had a watch of sentimental value and toiletries stolen which i believe could have been taken by staff. The key card never worked properly on my room and i spent hours asking nicely and waiting patiently for it to be fixed again and again. I did encounter the laissez - faire attitude you read about of two the reception staff and one of the chambermaids.
I was interviewed by security who said they would investigate and let me know if they found out who did it but after a couple of months all i got was a sarky letter telling me the contents of the rubbish bin in my room after i checked out!
In the end i left the hotel after 3 days and moved to a casa particular, which was fantastic and a fifth of the price.

Dear Trip Advisor user and reviewer,

Before posting my responses to the other, more relevant reviews, taken into account your serious accusation, I thought it would be best to answer this one first in order not to damage our image to other Trip Advisor Users.

First of all I wonder why you post your comments more than 2 years later? Anyhow, I checked my files and came up with the following: You state that you have been interviewed by our security agent. Well, we have gone through the records of september 2004 and strange enough, nothing appears.

And this is where my answer ends, because rest assured that security in Cuba, for many reasons whatsoever, is absolutely confident. If they don't have a record of your supposedly incident, then it just didn't took place.

As for all other tripadvisor users, and just as additional info: If we find any forgotten item in the room, we have our ways to trace the guest who stayed in that room. That way we were able in the entire year 2004, to return 10 watches to their rightful owners, amongst them 2 rolexes.

Pls rest assured that we maintain records since 1998 when the hotel opened and we can trace everything.

I don't know what hidden reason this reviewer might have to post his review, so in this case I will ignore the ranking given in this review.

I trust this takes away any concern your reviwers might have.

Hospitable Regards,
