We stayed in the Parque Central in may for three nights before heading to varadero for a week on the beach, the hotel was completely perfect.
The location is brilliant, right in the centre of old havana, the service and quality of food is great and the roof top pool and bar are amazing.
We arrived late at night and they were really efficient in checking us in. Our room was a suite, it was massive with a separate living area with a sofa, tv and coffee table. The bathroom was spotless with a separate shower and bath.
Our room had a terrace overlooking the main square and Capitol buildings. THe view was fantastic.
Havana is a great city, definitely one of the best and most interesting cities i've been to.
It's not the kind of place where there are loads of monuments/churches to see, it's best just to wander round and soak up the atmosphere. We walked all around Old Havana, which is gorgeous. It's like stepping into a time warp as the city is just as it was in the 50s, pre-revolution, nothing has changed. The paint is peeling off the walls and the buildings are crumbling, but you can tell how lovely they were in their glory days.
The people are very friendly, although you can get a bit ripped off.
The location of the hotel is perfect because if you're looking around Old Havana, you can drop back into the hotel to cooldown (it was roasting when we were there)
It was like a haven in the middle of boiling hot crazy city.
We sat in the patio area that has a glass roof and had croque monsiuers and mojhitos and beers then went off touring around again. Both days after we'd spent hours walking around the city we sat up at the outdoor roof pool. It's lovely, the views over the city are fantastic and you can lie there in the sun and see the capital building and the sea in the distance.
There's roof top bar as well which is great.
On the last day we sat up there and had lunch on the terrace, we got pizza and beer, and looked out over the city.
The breakfast is just amazing. There's a huge platter ranging from cooked breakfast to cakes and pastries, cereals, fresh fruit to cheese, cold meats and cooked eggs.
You can even have champagne for breakfast.
On our first night in Havana we went to look for a restaurant and ended up meeting a cuban couple who took us to a palador, one of the local houses that opens up their front room as a restaurant. It was quite an experience. The only bad thing about cuba is the food. apart from the parque central, the food everywhere is dry meat or fish with potatoes, shredded cabbage and rice with black beans. in the palador, although the food wasnt great it was fab to meet local people and we had a great time chatting to them.
afterthe dinner we went for mojhitos in a local bar, were totally ripped off but was worth it to drink with cuban locals.
another thing is, everybody asks you to buy them milk for their babies, because they are food vouchers and catn seem to get enough milk. i got ripped off buying a guy £25 worth of powder milk, but youcant feel too bad about it, because they obviously need milk for their babies.
Also, when y oure' in havana, go out of the tourist areas into central havana, its a real eye opener and amazing to stroll through and experience local life.
And get the auto richshaws, theyre great fun
we went to club tropicana too, which is really worth the money.
parque central was one of the best hotels weve stayed in and wo uld definitely go back
