We stayed at the NH Parque Central for 4 nights over the period 28 Aug - 1 Sep 05. The hotel is conveniently situated in the Old Town area and the main places of interest are within walking distance. The air-conditioned lobby provides welcome relief from the heat and humidity; the air-con in the rooms, which are spacious and modern, is equally welcome. Expect to be approached by the locals as you leave the hotel. Although it can be overbearing, they are very friendly and we did not feel our personal safety was compromised. Soap, pens and pencils are often requested
The food in the hotel was excellent, particularly the breakfast, and the dining room staff are very friendly and helpful. Likewise the bar staff (Alexis in particular) and lobby staff were efficient (the slow service referred to in earlier reviews was not in evidence); however, the Reception staff were not overly helpful in helping with queries. The roof top pool with its stunning view of Havana is worthy of mention.
On a minor point, the hotel is very business orientated with many corporate conferences and we felt that this detracted from the personal touch for holiday makers. To illustrate the point, the hotel staff were advised that we were on honeymoon by the tour operator and by personal email with a request for a parque facing room (away from the building works to the rear). However, this was not acknowledged and we were allocated a rear-facing room. Similarly when we handed in a letter of complaint to the Guest Relations Executive on day one, the courtesy of a reply was not forthcoming before we checked out. My point is not to make a special case for honeymoon couples - but to highlight the poor communication by hotel staff when it comes to customer relations.
That said, overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Parque Central in Havana and, in comparison to the other hotels we visted in the City, we would highly recommend it.
