We were in Cuba with Virgin Holidays.
Our first hotel was NH Parque Central in Havana. We would recommend it, so check out the reviews.
The Lonely Planet guides are excellent, but Cuba is changing so fast and things are not exactly as written in The Lonely Planet. It is still worth buying but prices have gone up so take money cash than you feel you might need.
We heard that Cuba is not a place to go to for food and we can agree with that statement. Cuban food does not use many spices and it is rather bland. Dining out is not a swanky experience.
That said the NH Parque Central hotel is ideally located in the heart of the old town of Havana with large spacious rooms and a great rooftop pool and sunbathing area. There have been comments about the staff at NH Parque Central – mostly negative. We found the staff helpful and friendly.
Breakfast at this hotel is excellent and it is a great place to stay in Cuba. We would highly recommend it.
Tipping is necessary in Cuba if you want good service or in some case just to get service!
If you are going to Havana you must go to the Museo del Chocolate, the Plaza de la Revolucion, a visit to the cigar factory and eat at Paladar la Guardia.
We would not recommend paying 10 CUC each way to go to El Aljibe for dinner.
If you are using The Lonely Planet guide we would recommend the short walking tour, but not the longer one unless you plan to go to the museums listed.
Hemmingway has a part in Cuban history and whilst you can go to El Floridita and Bodeguita del Medio, we would not recommended getting ripped off on drink prices. Go. Have a look. Take photos and leave. There are cheaper places to drink!
You MUST take a ride on a Coco taxi. Great fun and only 7 CUC’s to get either to or from the Plaza de la Revolucion from the hotel.
Top tip – don’t wait to buy at the airport as it is not cheaper. It is actually more expensive.
REMEMBER – you must have 25 CUC (Cuban Convertibles) per person including children in CASH to pay as a departure tax at the airport.
If you are lucky enough to be someone who can use the airport lounge – don’t get your hopes up as the lounge at Havana’s airport is just awful.
We were on a Virgin Holiday and they take you to the airport far too early and you end up waiting around in the airport which offers nothing of interest, so take a book!
It was also very disappointing to fly with Virgin as the planes they use for Cuba are very old. The food on the plane is also inadequate for an 8-10 hour flight. As a regular flyer with Virgin Atlantic we took the opportunity to book a Virgin Holiday, but the flight to and from Cuba really lets’ Virgin Atlantic down.
Cuba IS safe, but always take the usual precautions. Although will come up to you there are not generally aggressive or rude and will leave you alone.
