We stayed at the NH Parque Central for 4 days in November/December as part of a twin centre package with 10 nights in Varadero.
Check in was fairly straightforward and we were quickly given a second floor room on the corner of the building. Our room had a bedroom and a separate sitting area with a table and chairs, both of which had huge windows overlooking the park. Unfortunately there was scaffolding and netting up outside the windows (which meant they hadn’t been cleaned either) and you therefore couldn’t really see that well from them. Other than that it was a pleasant room, although the décor was a little old fashioned looking. (The traveller photos on trip advisor give you a good idea of what you’ll get.) The bathroom was large with a separate shower and was all kept nice and clean.
The roof top pool is great – there’s a wonderful view towards the Capitol building and it’s the perfect place to watch the sun go down. There's a jacuzzi which has a great corner window across the city but it was out of use when we were there. There are only limited sun loungers around the pool and these quickly get taken so get there early if you want one. It wasn’t really clear how you got towels, drinks or food – we eventually realised there was waiter service, however service is incredibly slow so you are better going straight to the bar at the back.
Breakfast is taken in the restaurant on the ground floor. There is the most enormous selection of food, everything you could want, hot and cold. Although breakfast was always busy we never had any problem getting a table, although the service for coffee could sometimes be slow.
We didn’t eat in the hotel (apart from snacks on the roof) so can’t comment on the rest of the food, other than that it seemed a little more expensive than restaurants outside the hotel. There are many different places to eat nearby though – literally just round the corner are El Floridita, Castillo de Farnés (excellent food and service, although it doesn’t look much from outside) and La Zaragozana as well as the roof top restaurant at the Hotel Sevilla (good food, great view), so there is really no need to eat in the hotel. We felt safe walking around the immediate area at night so no worries there either.
Probably the best thing about the hotel is the location; it’s close to many of the main attractions and it meant we could walk pretty much everywhere. We visited the Hotel Nacional de Cuba which was stunning looking and the perfect place for a drink on the terrace, but it is too far away from the centre to be convenient for a short city break.
There are plenty of taxis, coco taxis and horse & carriages right outside the hotel if you don’t want to walk everywhere. We took two horse & carriage tours, around Old and ‘New’ Havana - we went with Elmer (Horse No. 36) who we can thoroughly recommend. (He’s usually just outside the hotel.) He’ll take you to bars and restaurants too if you like. We were out probably 4 or 5 hours for 25 CUC (Old Havana tour) and 35 CUC (New) which we thought was a bargain, plus we got to see all over the city as well as going to places we probably wouldn’t have done on our own.
I would definitely recommend staying in this hotel and think everyone should visit Havana at least once - it’s a beautiful city with a fascinating history.
