Originally was supposed to be staying at the Inglaterra but First Choice pulled that from their brochure so we were put at the Habana Libre. Must admit, I would of much preferred the location of the Inglaterra although it only cost about 4 CUC's in a taxi in to the centre.
Check in at reception was a nightmare. The girl who checked us in didn't have much of a clue about what she was doing I don't think. It must of taken us about half an hour to check in. Her English wasn't very good either. In fact, I would say out of my whole trip to Cuba, the staff behind the reception at this hotel had the worst English of all the people that we came across.
When we got to our room (1304) we found it to be ok. Clean enough. The room was massive. The bathroom was also big. The toilet was about hanging off the wall though and I was convinced each time I sat on it that it would come away. The enamel on the bath was coming off in areas but you can get that in this country as well. The wash hand basin was in a separate area outside the bathroom.
There was a fridge in the room but had nothing in it. Other people that we spoke to said that they had a large bottle of water in their fridge.
The balcony in our room wasn't quite the balcony that everyone else seems to of been going on about. I would basically of called it a sill.
We ordered room service our first night. We ordered pizza and a cheeseburger. We got pizza and fried chicken!! The pizza wasn't very nice and wasn't very warm either.
Breakfast was ok. Stuck mostly to rolls, when we found a table. The chef was cooking fried eggs for someone and broke one of the the yolks so started chopping it up for the scrambled eggs dish instead. He had it on for seconds, I swear. After seeing that, that put me off their eggs instantly. Didn't want to catch anything, especially with the state our toilet was in! Tablecloths and napkins were a lot to be desired. Don't think they've heard of Vanish in Cuba. If a napkin was left on the table from someone previously using it, the staff didn't seem to change it for the next people who used the table. Gordon Ramsay would have an absolute field day here I think.
I found the lifts to be not too bad. You did have to wait a while longer sometimes but thats always to be expected I think. I don't know why you had to wait a while longer at times, especially with the speed that the lifts went at!!!!! You could fit quite a few people in the lifts at a time.
The reception bar was fine. Don't think the staff were keen to do waiter service so we went up to the bar and ordered then we seemed to get waiter service. The mojito that we had here was actually better than the mojito we had at La Bodeguita del Medio.
The pool area was quite nice. We only sat out to kill some time before transferring to Varadero for the rest of our holiday. Music was played and when some salsa music came on, a few groups of people around the pool got up to dance. Quite enjoyable to watch.
