We booked our holiday to Cuba with Kuoni and were originally due to stay at the Comodoro but a few months before the date we were contacted by kuoni to say that hotel no longer met their standards and therefore we had been moved to the Habana Libre. On reading the many awful reviews on this site we were braced for an appallingly bad few days but figured we would make the best of it and at least be prepared for it.
Imagine our surprise when we got to the hotel then! The lobby is large, airy and impressive looking, the staff were all polite and when we got to our room we were amazed - it was on the 8th floor but still had great views across the city and the bay, was HUGE, spotlessly clean, all the furniture seemed newish not shabby, there was no bad smell and the air conditioning worked perfectly.
Our guess was that it must depend on who you book with whether you get a good room or not, our personal experience with Kuoni is that the name seems to pull rank quite often in these situations and that would maybe explain the variance in reviews of this place. We seriously couldnt fault the place and spent 3 very happy nights here.
We found the room amazingly quiet at night and slept very well, we used room service for food a couple of times and although the first time the pizza was rather cold it was fine on other occassions. The breakfast buffet was great - extensive and varied, everything you could want, we never had a problem getting a seat either although we did tend to be down earlier rather than towards the end of breakfast.
We used the pool area on our last day and it all seemed clean and well staffed, we also ate in the cuban/italian restaurant downstairs by the reception one night which was very nice and good value. The location is great and very handy for getting about, about 4 pesos into downtown. All in all we would highly recommend this hotel from our experience - although we think it may depend who you book with whether you get such a great room and service.
