We booked this hotel through WiredDestinations and paid about 49 Euros/night for double occupancy rooms and 31 Euros/night for single occupancy for January 3 and 4th, 2007. We got rooms on the third floor and only the one facing the Malecon had much of a view, but two of the rooms were acceptible otherwise with great showers. The towels were more like handtowels, and we purchased beach towels so we'd have something for the pool, but this was more of an adventure than a huge problem. We also had to be persistent to get one lock for a safe that the five of us shared. One room was terrible though, with a tiny shower that barely worked, and a phone that simply didn't, but when we asked for a new room we were told there wasn't anything that night, but we were given a room on the 11th floor for the second night. We were worried about our choice after reading the reviews here, but the place was perfectly clean and we had no trouble with noise despite the 3rd floor location. The pool was fine, if chilly, while we were there. There was live music in the lobby bar both evenings, and we walked back to the hotel up Ave Italia from the Casa de la Musica on the second night after midnight without incident.

this is simply the worst hotel i have ever been to. its difficult to know where to start with listing the problems. probably the introduction we got from our guide as our coach pulled in to the road running behind it parallel to the malecon says it all 'don't under any circumstances walk down this road, this is locals only, too dangerous for tourists, oh and here on your right is your hotel....' the reception was dire, with every pain of glass cracked and dead flies everywhere. the food was appalling, lots of scrambled egg/pea concoctions and stale bread, with the obligatory dead flies in the baskets of course.
our room was on the 13th floor. our door had clearly been kicked in at some point as the frame was broken. there was an inch wide gap in the wall around the air conditioning unit and the whole place was generally grubby. the balcony looked like a death trap - big cracks running across the floor and a massive crack in the wall where the guard rail was attached to it. we didn't take any chances and didn't go out there. our balcony door had no lock so swung open and shut all night. we also had the sounds of the ancient lift all night. the swimming pool was alright when we could get to it. on the weekend it was full of cuban teenagers, presumably relatives of the staff. the location was horrible - raw sewage and stagnant water being pumped out of the flooded basements of the seafront buildings, lots of scary looking kids hanging around in the dark hassling us for money and to buy cigars. we got followed for a good 10 minutes by this one group, very intimidating. one of the more elderly couples at the hotel were mugged right outside the doors of the hotel, even with the 'tourist police' on the corner. PLEASE DON'T STAY AT THIS HOTEL!

Based on the reviews we were worried but our group of 21 was quite satisfied staying at this budget hotel. We found all of the review comments to be true - both good and bad. This place is a real mixed bag.
The building is shabby but pleasant where they have done rennovations. It depends on where you look. The double and tripple rooms were large, clean and if you can overlook peeling paint, quite pleasant. Room 410 had hopelessly sagging beds but beds in other rooms were fine. They gave us another room when we asked. Water pressure and hot water were fine, air conditioners were noisy but worked fine, elevators worked consistently, swimming pool had water in it part of the time. None of these things are to be taken for granted in Cuba! One person found the towels unacceptable, the rest of us thought they were ok. No cockroaches at all. Yes, noise from the Malecon carries up into the rooms. Hallway lights not always functioning. Hallways are not air conditioned - will be hot and muggy if it is hot and muggy outside -- logical.
Rooms on the upper floors (above the 6th floor) have incredible views!! and perhaps less noise from the street. Don't settle for a room without a view.
One of our members was assaulted a block from the hotel at night in the pouring rain. The area does not feel safe at night. Neighborhood is run down but feels ok during the day. Seems safe if you follow the Malecon or take taxi's which are readily available right in front of the hotel. You are on the edge of Central Havana and Old Havana so you can walk to Havana Vieja if you have a mind to.
Do use the safe deposit box in your room. They have limited number of locks so you have to check persistently until you get one.
Breakfast was fine. I think they have improved recently. The juice is from powder as is the coffee! But there were eggs every morning, cooked vegetables, fresh fruit and great fresh baked rolls. The rest of the meals at the hotel are overpriced and you can do better outside the hotel.
One GREAT find is a restaurant "La Guitana" close by the hotel with great food for $3-7 CUC. As you exit the hotel front door go to the left then left at the corner. It is one and a half blocks (continuing parallel to the malecon) on the left hand side. Nice awning, Spanish style decor, someone watching the door.
Great food. Slow but friendly service. Clean, very nice.
In summary:
Overall, this is a budget hotel so don't expect much. We stayed in a lot of rooms as a large group and found our rooms to be simple, large, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was fine in spite of past bad reviews. Be careful of crime. La Guitana restaurant around the corner was a real plus.

Hotel Deauville is alright for a budget option - clean room, nice views (through dirty windows), good location ... BUT (now for all the bad). Breakfast is indeed pretty grim, a decent enough choice of foods, problem is none of it is very nice. Hotel itself is a concrete monstrocity and shabby (but hey, this is Havana).

One HUGE issue when staying here however, I was unfortunate enough to get mugged on the Malecon not far from the hotel (Be careful at the Parque Maceo/Malecon area, all times of day, it was only 19.45 when I was mugged, two blokes jumped my friend and I from behind). I obviously needed to therefore cancel my cards and phone - for which the hotel charged me 40 CUC pesos!!! Approx £23 for 10minutes of essential calls? I struggled to pay as my cards and money were taken, so the manager told me that if I didn't pay he would take it out of the wages of the very sympathetic lady who was on desk at the time (who earns about 15 pesos a month) and /or fire her. I would (politely) comment on what I think of that but I don't want this review to get blocked as I think it's important for potential customers to make a well informed judgement.

I can't advise anyone to stay in the Hoteur Deauville after this deeply unpleasant experience - please keep safe and stay elsewhere.

The only good thing about this hotel is it's location. Everything about this hotel screeches NOISE, so if you're a sensitive sleeper and need peace and quiet to relax, don't stay here. The walls are so thin that you can hear absolutely everything. The lift had this loud annoying ping each time it reached each floor (and I wasn't even located too close to it). The corridors carried every noise possible. The general decor was shappy and the bathroom very small.
I'm generally, am not a fussy eater and will try anything, however the breakfast was beyond me and I ended up only eating bread - which didn't even seem fresh either. After 2 nights of little sleep I was totally depressed and was fortunately moved to a different hotel.
