Based on the reviews we were worried but our group of 21 was quite satisfied staying at this budget hotel. We found all of the review comments to be true - both good and bad. This place is a real mixed bag.
The building is shabby but pleasant where they have done rennovations. It depends on where you look. The double and tripple rooms were large, clean and if you can overlook peeling paint, quite pleasant. Room 410 had hopelessly sagging beds but beds in other rooms were fine. They gave us another room when we asked. Water pressure and hot water were fine, air conditioners were noisy but worked fine, elevators worked consistently, swimming pool had water in it part of the time. None of these things are to be taken for granted in Cuba! One person found the towels unacceptable, the rest of us thought they were ok. No cockroaches at all. Yes, noise from the Malecon carries up into the rooms. Hallway lights not always functioning. Hallways are not air conditioned - will be hot and muggy if it is hot and muggy outside -- logical.
Rooms on the upper floors (above the 6th floor) have incredible views!! and perhaps less noise from the street. Don't settle for a room without a view.
One of our members was assaulted a block from the hotel at night in the pouring rain. The area does not feel safe at night. Neighborhood is run down but feels ok during the day. Seems safe if you follow the Malecon or take taxi's which are readily available right in front of the hotel. You are on the edge of Central Havana and Old Havana so you can walk to Havana Vieja if you have a mind to.
Do use the safe deposit box in your room. They have limited number of locks so you have to check persistently until you get one.
Breakfast was fine. I think they have improved recently. The juice is from powder as is the coffee! But there were eggs every morning, cooked vegetables, fresh fruit and great fresh baked rolls. The rest of the meals at the hotel are overpriced and you can do better outside the hotel.
One GREAT find is a restaurant "La Guitana" close by the hotel with great food for $3-7 CUC. As you exit the hotel front door go to the left then left at the corner. It is one and a half blocks (continuing parallel to the malecon) on the left hand side. Nice awning, Spanish style decor, someone watching the door.
Great food. Slow but friendly service. Clean, very nice.
In summary:
Overall, this is a budget hotel so don't expect much. We stayed in a lot of rooms as a large group and found our rooms to be simple, large, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was fine in spite of past bad reviews. Be careful of crime. La Guitana restaurant around the corner was a real plus.
