We arrived at the Comodoro fairly late at night after what seemed like forever on the bus! The hotel is very imposing and looks very grand. We checked in easily and were shown to our room which was a bungalow (on the 2nd floor!!)

The room was fine, basic but had a separate sitting area and kitchen. The kitchen area was a little icky and I would not liked to have cooked in it – we only used the fridge to keep the water cool! The beds were comfy and my husband was happy as there was 2 TV’s!! (Easily pleased!!)

As it was late and we had not eaten, we ate at the Italian in the hotel building, which was lovely and very well priced.

The pool area was lovely and by day we spent our time lounging here – it was hot hot hot! The pools go round the buildings and there are little bridges to get over each side. By night it looks fantastic. We ate at the pool bar which again, for a hotel complex was cheap.

Once it started to cool down we jumped into a taxi and headed to the centre - the hotel is quite a way out – about 20-25mins in a taxi. Havana was really nice and we enjoyed looking round the market stalls and at the trinkets.

Breakfast in the hotel was limited – ok to put you on but a few strange items included on there!! (Probably the previous nights leftovers!!)

We went out onto the sea front area and hubby was like – where is the beach? I said this is it!! There wasn’t anything to it – I wouldn’t have gone in the water.

We had a good time at the Comodoro, we are not fussy or picky at all and we always make the best of what we have – I could see that some people wouldn’t be happy here but it was fine for a 2/3 night stay here.

We booked a two centre holiday, the first part in the Hotel Brisas, Guardalvaca, was excellent then moved to Havana for the last three days.
Unfortunately, the Comodoro was awful, the ground floor had a collection of unidentifiable obnoxious smells. The third floor, where my room was situated was shabby which I could accept but it was also very dirty which was not acceptable. My bathroom had the remains of the previous occupant's toothpaste and hair, possibly remains from a selection of previous occupants. Breakfast was definitely to be avoided, on our first morning there were no tables available and one of the breakfast specialities was cold Brussel sprouts.
Also the hotel was a 20 minute taxi ride from old Havana.

  • Liked — I liked absolutely nothing but if you were staying in the bungalows the pool outlook was quite good.
  • Disliked — Unfortunately, everything about the hotel was equally bad.

We stayed at the Comodoro for two days on a tour and found it to be a lovely place. We were in the upper floor of a bungalow, overlooking the winding pool. The suites were spacious and clean. Food was good and the entertainment very good. We had a great time , getting up on the stage and participating in the show.

  • Liked — Pool right outside the door
  • Disliked — nothing

The Comodoro was offered as part of a 2-centre holiday.
Although located in the suburbs, the hotel provided a free coach to town, operating several times a day till 11.30pm last bus from town.
Taxi about 12CUCS.
The air-conditioned rooms are basic but clean, located around a meandering pool, and the main building is also, mercifully, air conditioned.
The buffet meals were adequate if unexciting. Two other restaurants served a-la-carte meals, also used by Cubans.
The Roma 'Italian' served a very good starter of squid and prawns, but the pizza was grim indeed. Cost of starters, pizzas, 1 glass of wine, 1 beer, was 14CUCs for 2 people, about £8.
In the other restaurant we had excellent chic-pea soup, followed by large, rare, tasty fillet steaks. The cost was reasonable by UK standards, although I can't remember the exact price.
We also had 'lobster' but this was overcooked and - probably - crayfish. We should have asked to see the lobster before ordering.
In the lobby bar, Bucannero beer is 2CUCs per can, and the mojitos and coffee were adequate. Evening entertainment was fun if a bit second-rate.

Staff were pleasant and responsive.

There is internet access although the charge is excessive at 8 CUCs per hour.

The man-made 'beach' next to the hotel is all but washed away.

Next to the expensive shopping arcade is a nice street bar which serves excellent snacks. We never ventured much further as we spent most time in Havana itself.

We stayed at the Comodoro in June 2006, we had a simply wonderful time and loved every second of our stay. We stayed in the bungalows and the standard of accommodation was excellent, clean, well maintained with an excellent maid service who even made amazing designs with the towels every day.

There were swimming pools all around the complex and the bar service was excellent, indeed we thought all the staff were wonderful throughout the whole complex. We wanted to especially pay tribute to the tour guide, Elio, who could not have been more helpful and informative and helped us in all our plans.

The Comodoro is situated close to Havana with even a free shuttle provided (or of course you could always take a classic car) and good beaches were a short ride away (the beach is not at the hotel, so you will have to make do with lounging in one of the pools with a drink whilst you work out which of the fabulous excursions you want to take!). Close also is the Hemmingway Marina, as visited by Michael Palin and even the bus journey from the airport is fascinating.

We had the breakfast only option (excellent choice and freshness) and since shops and services were on-site we never struggled to find anything. We also never saw a mosquito whilst we were there, another plus for the venue.

You cannot please everyone, but in trips to over 50 countries, this is one of our all-time favourites, loved the country and the people and would return anytime, especially to the Comodoro.
