Having just visited Havana with the family, Cuba Havana is by no means cheap. 1 CUC=1$.I can't comment on the hotels but the private house we stayed at ( Casa ) was 30$ per room. That's ok. However eating out is expensive and food is of marginal quality for the price one is paying. For 2 adults and 2 children average meal was approximately between CUC 150 - 180- excluding bottle of wine. Lots of hawkers everywhere and most carry similar products which in my opinion are not good for value for money. Cuban cigars are however are very good value. We did not have time to go beyond the Havana district but I have canvassed from other friends that the mid section of Cuba where most of the Cuban cigar's are manufactured is the best thing to do for good quality cigars. Eastern part of Cuba is apparently beautiful and has exceptional scuba diving waters. Cuba/ Havana is not for the faint hearted as there are many sections which are dodgy and very undeveloped!! Best choice we made was to stay at a private Casa=home/flat. You live amongst Cuban's and witness their daily routine. Just standing at a busy traffic road/corner one is catapulted back into the 50's and 60's time machine with the hundred's of old classic cars going by. This is Cuba at it's best. The most disappointing was the Revolution Museum. If this was Cuba's fulcrum of change then this present exhibition is an unmitigated disaster. The RM is an interesting time line of the revolution and yet so shabby. One can see some renovation in progress but that's like watching baobab trees grow!! I recommend Cuba because it has great architecture and a lot of buildings from all the different cultural influences which have already been preserved and beautifully restored. One can feel Cuba is under going change and therefore a must visit before it completely changes within the next few years. It is also very much a lesson to witness that the communism ideology does not work. Enjoy Cuba.
