Decided to book a two centre holiday in Cuba, three nights in Havana and seven nights in Jibacoa. We chose Ambos, because it was fairly small and becuase of the history with Hemingway.
We were not disappointed with it, the lobby had an old-fashioned 30's feel to it, with the pianist playing and the bar being the main focal point. The roof top restauarant was also a delight and the food was good. The room was basic but clean and fuctional, however the air-con decided to pack up on the last day! And you do need it as a respite for the heat and humidity.
The hotel was perfectly located in Old Havana and was in a pedistrainised area so you didn't have cars running up and down.
The only criticisms I have are that some of the staff, especially in the restaurant and at reception, do not give that welcome feeling and and sometimes have to wait a while to be seen to. Also, due to the history of the hotel, it is on the guided walk tours, so you do get a lot of groups coming in to the lobby during the day. Overall this is a great hotel in which to stay in Havana.

“Perfect location in the Old Havana but...”

Hotel Ambos Mundos

May 5, 2008

The Ambos Mundos hotel is perfectly located in the very center of Old Havana, near Plaza de Armas. It has a wonderful view from the roof where breakfast is served.

The only thing to have to check is that they give you a room with a window ! Some rooms haven't... We were shown three rooms before we got one with a balcony (for the same price). The rooms in front of the elevator are noisy.

The rooms are simple, but clean. The location of the hotel allows to have a break during the day, as it is in the very center of Old Havana. It is also in Calle Obispo, which is full of bars, shops, restaurants and music. You don't have to take taxis all the time.

We really enjoyed the hotel Ambos Mundos. Yes, it is overpriced but it´s hard to get a place in a good location in Havana that isn´t and trust us the less you pay the less you get. There are some really grotty places here. Make sure when booking here you ask for a room with a view or you´re stay may be heavily dampened by the fact that some rooms have no windows or look onto the interior of the building. The maids are lovely and the breakfast is about as good as you can expect in Havana. The location is the best though....perfect. Book ahead on fastbooking.com to save some money here.

We only stayed in this hotel as when we arrived at Hotel Florida (2 blocks away) to start our Honeymoon we were told that they had a problem with their airconditioning and had to stay one night at this hotel. We were allocated the room below where Ernest Hemingway stayed which had lovely large windows overlooking the square & street.

We have no complaints with the room (mainly because it must have been one of the best rooms in the hotel). The room was well furnished and their was hot water in the bathroom. There was slight noise from outside from the musicians playing at the nearby restaurants but this ended by 11.30pm and with earplugs (picked up on the Air France flight) I was able to sleep no problems.

We ate an evening meal (Cuban dishes) at the restaurant on the roof and found it both delicious and good value for money. The breakfast was also good. The views are also great.

“Hemingway lived here”

Hotel Ambos Mundos

The Ambos Mundos is right in the heart of Old Hanana within minutes of all the Historic sights, museums and Catherdral. The moment you enter this hotel you step back in time 50 years. This is the place that Hemingway chose to live for seven years during his stay in Cuba and his room is open to viewing by tourists for a small fee. Can't comment on this as didn't bother to look at it. Here the rooms are disappointingly small with two small single beds. I recommend that you insist on an 'exterior' facing room as a lot of the rooms are within a block inside the actual building under an atrium. We had room 302 which opened onto the front of the hotel but was close to the lift so a bit noisy, suggest 304 or 6-8 or similar on other floors. There was the most AWFUL smell in the bathroom which was like leaking gas (not your usual drain smell) we only stayed three nights so just put up with it but suggest you check it first before deciding to stay in your chosen room. Breakfast is the highlight of the day here. Served on the rooftop with wonderful views of the Old City and harbour. As long as you don't expect luxury and polish and accept it for what it is then this hotel could be a good choice for your first time in Havana.
