We arranged fror a three night stay at the Ambos Mundos hotel for that special "Old Havana" experience. We wanted an upscale, well-located hotel, with a stellar reputation, to complete a two-week stay in Cuba. What a dissappointment!
The check-in was friendly enough despite the fact that arrangements were made directly with the hotel manager--who neglected to register the actual reservation. We were given a room with a harbour view, next to Hemingway's Room. We quickly threw our bags in the room--a bit small--and then explored Havana. When we came back we realized how patheticllay small the room actually was. Two single beds, crammed in a room that would normally be the size of a large bathroom in other hotels--but including a small desk and a closet. No room to unpack anything, no place to put clothes.
The bathroom was tiny. No floor mats--so the floor was wet--which of course got the floor in the sleeping part of the room, wet also. The lock on the bathroom did not work--one of us got stuck in there for 5 minutes.
The myth about Ambos Mundos mojitos is just that. Surly waiters prepare a drink that is a bit of mint leaves, a bit of sugar and a lot of rum. The only thing you taste is the rum. The mojito is a waste of money. If you want a decent mojito, go to La Bodegita--not the Ambos Mundos rooftop bar.
Breakfast is served at the rooftop bar. Again, an early morning greeting was lacking from the surly staff. Room number? That is all that was said to us. The food was cafeteria quality. Enough said.
So, we checked out of Ambos Mundos at 8:30 that morning for a much better hotel. (Los Frailes--which I highly recommend).
So, once again the guide books seem to want to perpetuate the myth of the Ambos Mundos. Save your time and money and avoid this place. By the way--the harbour view? Well, if you strain your next you can actually see the harbour over and through the rooftops. Trust me--it is not as romantic as the guide books would have it sound.
