I'd read alot of negative reviews of Hotel Nacional but have nothing but good things to say about the hotel.
I travelled with my girlfriend and we may have got lucky as we got sent to the Executive Floor (6th Floor) on our arrival and checked in at a smaller quieter reception area.
Our room (623) was great. I've stayed in 5 Star hotels around the globe and the room was of a high standard. I had incorrectly requested a double room and got two single beds (book a single room and you get a double bed !!). Whilst this was dissappointing it meant that we both got a good night's sleep every night.
The view was stunning. Overlooking the beautiful gardens and the Malecon. Our air conditioner did not seem to work but the cooling breeze coming in off the Straits of Florida kept the room at a nice temeprature at night (as long as you kept your window open).
The hotel is vast and has many bars and restaurants to suit your tastes. The food is not great quality but the locals just don't have the produce that we get at home. As soon as your realise this you can be careful where you eat.
The Galeria Bar is just so pleasant I get choked up thinking about it. Whicker setees over looking the gardens with peacocks wandering around. Lovely cocktails and live bands playing. It is the perfect place to start and finish your evening. The service slackens off towards 11pm but it's not a massive problem. Again the breeze off the ocean keeps you cool as you smoke your Romoe y Julietas and sip your drinks.
The hotel provided everything we needed. A bureau de change, cigar shop, off licence (rum, rum and more rum), concierge desk to buy your batteries etc.
Being on the 6th Floor the receptionists were really helpful. Confirming transfers with your travel company, making reservations at restaurants etc. They even allowed me to buy the lovely Hotel Nacional dressing gowns they supply in your room and for a few pesos would allow your to check out later. I did not have a single gripe with the service at all.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone. It's the most renowned hotel in Havana (every local tells you that). It's a 5 minute cab ride to the centre of town (5 pesos). It's beautifully located and it is an amazing building. It's very old school colonial looking and has a brilliant atmosphere to boot.
As mentioned previously we may have got lucky with being given a room on the 6th Floor so I cannot comment on the other floors.
A great week was made considerably more enjoyable purely because we stayed at The Nacional.
If you go to Havana stay here. you will not regret it.
