My review is perhaps a little late but I think it's worth posting. June of 05 was actually the 3rd time in 6 months that I had stayed at the Nacional. It is very much like a good wine: it becomes better with age! And the number of times you stay there. Granted, the hotel itself might technically not be up there with other 5 star hotels elsewhere in the Caribbean but, where else do you find that atmosphere?! Let me go down the list of pros and cons:
As with all hotels, the location is what matters. It is excelllent! On the Malecon with (if you are lucky)a view of old Havana and just a 5 minute ride by (coco)taxi away from the center of old Havana. Peace and quiet, yet close enough to the enticing hustle and bustle of old Havana. Another advantage is the big garden that offers a wonderfully relaxing environment to go for a stroll at night. Oh, and did I mention the huge, hacienda-like innercourt with supercomfortable sofas, friendly 24-hour bar service and excellent live music??? Bliss!! How does that sound for relaxation after a busy and exciting day of discovering all that Havana has to offer?! Breakfast is so-so; not a great variety but, friendly service and the ready-made items (omelettes, fried eggs & pancakes) were good. Great selection of fresh fruits and juices! Nice pool area (the bigger one, not the one next to the breakfast room) with poolbar service. Friendly and quite an experience to be in a bathing suit watching the beautiful classic cars cruise by on the Malecon below. The Cabaret Parisienne is wonderful; you can try it with dinner but beware that the service does not always match the timing of the show. You might very well have to eat desert with feathers flying around you. Great to watch from a distance but, with feathers landing in your desert, you might want to reconsider the dinner part and go have a simple but very tasty meal at the Sports Bar of the hotel. The various bars offer a glimpse of Havana and the Nacional of times gone by. It is almost palpable and if you have the chance, check with the PR department and see if you can set up a meeting with a man called Jorge Jorge. He was there when the hotel opened its doors and worked there all of his life. I believe he is now close to or in his early nineties. He has amazing stories to tell, has his picture on the wall at the Bar de la Fama with many of the hotels famous guests and is a wealth of information. The Hotel's historic department still uses him for reference! Now for the down side: sure, the tapestry is up for renewal, taps and fawcetts may be leaky and on some floors a fresh layer of paint is long overdue. Does that outweigh the old, old elevators with the oldfashioned arm showing which floor it is on? No! Not by a long shot! The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is a perfect introduction to the world of Havana, a world that combines yesterday and today. It is a dazzling and fascinating blend that is guaranteed to steal your heart. Do not expect a modern, tightly run and efficient 5-star hotel. Look forward to nostalgia, great atmosphere and the feeling of being back in the fifties.
