We spent 4 days (5-8 May) at the Hotel Nacional and after having read many reviews on TripAdvisor we were under no false impressions but were hoping to see some of the faded glamour of the place.
The lobby of the hotel and the verandah and gardens are lovely, you really get a feel for how the place used to be in its day and the mojitos served in the garden bar (overlooking the malecon) are second to none, probably the best that we had whilst in Cuba (stayed also at Melia Cayo Coco, see separate review).
Our room was OK, albeit that the carpets do need replacing but the beds and linen were extremely clean and comfortable. Unfortunately our shower was not working properly and after reporting this three times to the concierge and assurance that someone would repair we gave up and used the bath instead. We decided that the Cuban way of doing things is slowly. Whilst we stayed at the Nacional the main pool was shut for painting although was open again on the day before we left. there is a smaller lane pool round the side of the hotel though. The pool bar does snack food albeit basic and the staff themselves do not fall over themselves to help you despite there being around 6-8 staff! It seemed the more polite you were the more they ignored you. However, having seen some of our fellow Europeans be very rude, the staff seemed to give them better service!
We didn't really eat in any of the other restaurants, much preferring to visit the old town and some of the places there. Very easy to get into the old town and takes about 5 mins in a cab for about CUC 5 peso or less. Taxis are always outside the front of the hotel.
If you do happen to need a nurse whilst there (which unfortunately we did) be prepared to take a Spanish phrase book with you. We were trying to communicate very badly that my boyfriend had an ear infection. Finally after a couple of calls to other hotel staff we managed to resolve the problem, the equipment that she had was terrible though, luckily as a thank you present we gave her a small medical kit which included bandages etc and she was overjoyed. Prepare to take everything you can think of in terms of medicines as you will find it difficult to buy in Havana.
Havana is an amazing city and well worth the visit for the architecture and culture alone, although we would probably prefer to stay within the old town at the Sevilla or NH Parque Central next time.
