Hotel Nacional is worth a visit, even if you're not staying there. They do tours 2 or 3 times a day (ask at the information desk for times) explaining the history of the hotel and its famous former guests.
Definitely look for good online deals when booking Cuban hotels. Travel agents in Cuba seem incapable of getting a good price, but bargains are to be found online. We got an offer where if we stayed for two nights we each got a free entry to the Parisien.
The Parisien cabaret (a rival to the Tropicana) was well worth a watch - fabulous costumes and lots of colour.
The hotel itself has everything from a bureau de change to a cigar shop, two pools, many bars and a choice of restaurants. It is situated close to the Malecon (wide road running round the coast of Havana) which for couples is worth visiting with a bottle of rum to sample the true Cuban experience.
It's also close too the US Special Interests section which hilariously you're not allowed to walk in front of, and must cross the road (we also got whistled at by police not happy that we took photos). The US have a LED display with messages espousing values apparently pro-democracy, but when we were there they just had sports results about the LA Dodgers.
The rooms are lovely, modern well-fitted bathrooms and an absolutely massive bed.
