“Fantastic Hotel, Great Location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 19, 2012

I was very impressed with this hotel- particularly having been driven through Havana from Jose Marti airport and seeing some of the hotels along the way - some of which are in some need of quite extensive repair! The place is pristine- and the staff are very helpful (in the restaurant). We stayed in a Historic Room that Walt Disney had previously stayed in so that added to our stay. The buffet breakfast was excellent- with everything you can think of to chose from. There are renovations going on at present but they seem to finish up early enough to get a good nights rest. The location is great with views of the sea and only 5 minutes to the Old Centre of Havana in a taxi. There are many shops inside the hotel including a cigar shop in the basement and there is even a bank downstairs if you need to withdraw more Pesos during your trip. There are even groups of tourists that some to the hotel every day as it is listed as a National Monument. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the Historic rooms - you might be lucky!

We spent 4 days in Havana at the Hotel Nacional, and we really enjoyed it.
It was a huge room, and it was really clean with daily room service.
At breakfast there was a wide selection of food, but room service food wasn't great.
Staff was polite.

My friend and I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights, traveling as part of a group. I was quite prepared by these reviews to find the place awful, but want all to know it clearly was not! Think large city, older, classic hotel. We had a large room, well decorated, comfortable beds, ample closet space and great service to the room and in the lobby. Our room had been converted all to 110 V. Amusingly, the hair dryer was 220- but they quickly came with the converter solution. Yes, plan on giving the toilet 3 flushes. Now you know. Everything was clean. One couple requested a room change due to small room size and a very noisy air conditioner; Breakfast was a pretty typical Caribbean buffet: eggs done to order, fresh fruit, pastries, cold meat, cheeses, hot and cold cereals, yogurt, coffee, juice.... The cold brussel sprouts were a surprise I did not try. I wish I had arisen early enough to enjoy a cup of coffee outdoors overlooking the malecon.
Don't be fearful of this hotel!

We stayed in historical district of La Havana before but because of New Year all the historical colonial properties downtown were full so we gave it a try to Hotel Nacional de Cuba, which happened to be a terrible choice.

1. Interesting history of the property, which hosted mafia meetings in old times and was later converted into the official place to stay for foreign dignitaries (loads of picture of socialist comrade guests, singers, heads of state, etc.)

2. The hotel is priced as an international luxury property (we paid over $300 per night) but hardly delivers what you would expect from a motel, this is why it left us hugely DISAPPOINTED

3. Lobby is ok, although check-in, check-out process is absolutely chaotic and would remind you of having to queue to enter a shop in the worst time of soviet era. I appreciate that they were fully booked on the new year's eve when we stayed at, but 30 minutes wait to check-in was a bit of a hassle. Despite having a confirmed double room, we were given a room with two single beds and after endless hours of negotiation it was impossible to get it fixed or have any kind of commercial compensation, despite have a double bed confirmed by email beforehand...

4. Maintenance of the room was below the minimum you can expect, even in Cuba, with leaks in the bathroom, old charmless furniture (I'm not talking about old colonial tables/beds which would have been part of the story, but really old soviet-IKEA type with so poor quality that everything is falling apart)

5. Hygiene: BIG ISSUE!!! When coming back at night, we were welcomed by a COCKROACH crawling on our sheets (see picture attached). When mentioning it to front desk, we had to wait for 20 minutes for a guy to come, shake the sheets to throw the cockroach on the floor and kill it on the carpet. It seemed unreasonable for them to change the sheets so we had to insist and waited for 1.5 hours (it was past midnight already!!!) to get someone coming up with new beddings... It was just the most unbelievable, careless, customer ignorant experience I have ever had in any accommodation in my whole life! When you charge $300 a night to deliver this, I think you should have been logically out of business for ages

6. Breakfast: Another 10 minutes queue before entering the breakfast room. Food in line with other places in Cuba, nothing particularly worth the 'exceptional' position Hotel Nacional is claiming but that's OK. Nice tables outside to enjoy the morning breeze

7. Check-out: Even if you haven't buy anything in the minibar, you have to wait in line for check-out (45 minutes for us due to a group of 15-20 people checking out together before us) to get a "checking-out ticket". Staff will run after you on the car park if you don't have this ticket, although you don't owe them anything, you did not drink anything in the minibar, this is the procedure you have to follow. Needless to say that it was from checking-in to checking-out one of the most terrible stays in a hotel given how badly is the property managed and how much you have to wait everywhere (I'm living in England, I am patient and have no problem with queuing when things are done rationally, but here, it was just a nightmare from beginning to the end...)

Can't recommend anything but staying away or coming with very low expectations, as if you booked at a one star property.

Room Tip: Rooms on third floor have not been renovated for at least 20 years. Everything pretty much falling a...

Stayed here on our last two nights in Cuba (after being in casas particulares for a number of nights). Although we had some trepidations based on comments by other reviewers, we were very glad we did. On the third floor, facing the Malecon, the room was quiet and the view was wonderful. There are things to quibble about. Our toilet didn't flush properly, and both bedside lights were wonky. The breakfast buffet offered a gargantuan amount of mostly terrible food. But the Nacional is wonderfully situated and its history and design are extraordinary. The 90-minute history tour of the hotel was outstanding.

The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is too expensive for me to stay at but I have enjoyed visiting it for 10 years now. They are proud of their rich history and display many interesting photos. The bar on the west side has the most shots of famous people.
The grounds are a pleasant place to visit for a drink, relax, and listen to live music. You can use the pool for a cover charge ( that is given back to you as a credit at the pool bar/cafe ). There are sometimes exhibitions by Cuban artists in Salon 1930. The hotel has a decent cigar shop. The patio by the bluff offers nice views of the sunset. Check out the huge cannons while you are there. I haven't been to the Cabaret Parisien but am told that it is not nearly as good as the Tropicana.
For less expensive food and drinks check out Restaurante Amigi del Sapore across the street on the 3rd floor. For good jazz after 9 PM, La Zorra y El Cuervo is 1 block west on La Rampa. Look for the red English phone booth.

We stayed at this hotel for 7 nights with my elder son. We were given a large cozy room with 3 single beds with a view to the sea. The bathroom was fine. The only downside was the tv - it was placed inside a large ceiling long cabinet. It was difficult for my husband to watch the tv from his corner bed. The biggest problem was the loud noise from the generator, it would leave us awake for hours during the night. The hotel itself is steeped in history. Even if you are non-resident, there is a hotel tour everyday at 10am, conducted by a 70 year old lady who has been through the 1958/9 revolution along with Fidel Castro. Whilst on holiday, there was presentation on tv by this lady with old footage of the hotel – how it was frequented by the mafia, the old Hollywood stars during the hotel’s prime. Be aware if you want to exchange any money, you should either undertake this task in the evening or very early in the morning - ideally before 10am as the desk is closed to provide assistance to guests leaving the hotel in the mornings. The hotel’s information centre is fine, it has many tours, some assistants provide good a good service some have difficulty speaking fluent English. The breakfast area is fine, it is like any normal hotel. We used the restaurant on the first day, it was ok, we had difficulty in understanding the menu, the staff were very slow and showed a lot of patience for Spanish speakers. If you want to buy cigars, do frequent the hotel cigar shop – it worthwhile and excellent prices. Likewise you’ll find the 7 year old Havana rum sold here at the same price as the local shops in the city centre. The outdoor seating area is pleasant with lots of different bands and Spanish singers during the day and evening. The hotel is near some good local restaurants and the Malecon is outside the hotel for lovely strolls next to the sea.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the restaurant area
