I have been at this restaurant at least 20 times. Doctor Café (so-called because it's run by a family of medics) is one of Havana's best places to eat. Located in a quiet suburban street in the embassy district of Miramar, the consistency, value and atmosphere at this unassuming paladar are reflected in its popularity, especially among the expat community living in Havana.
There is no written menu—the choices are recited by the waiters—and all of the food is prepared on the barbeque outside (unless you specify otherwise). The steaks, seafood, venison, turtle and rabbit are all top class. The barbequed pargo (a white tropical fish) is a delight and the large salads, for just 3CUC, are great value, too. The puréed malanga and yuca (both earthy root vegetables) with garlic sauce, are among the best in Havana, and the home-made bread is excellent. Prices range from 7CUC to 15CUC per main course. Our favourite dish is the astonishingly good steak with malanga, and mushrooms in a delicious sauce—a steal at just 15CUC. Or you could opt for the delicious pork loin dish with malanga, for just 8CUC. There’s a small room with just four tables inside, a second one with just two, or you can choose the garden area outside.
