Coming from the airport at 4am, I found out there were no rooms left at B&B Casa Margo, even though I had received a confirmed reservation 2 weeks before in Canada. After sleeping a few hours in a just acceptable room, I then spent the day looking for a B&B that would feel like a vacation. My lack of spanish made it difficult but when I met Reymond, who spoke perfect english, it was like a dream come true.
Owned by Reymond & Raydel, La Casona de Obrapia is perfectly located in Old Havana. Their house is superb, very colorful, ceilings as high as the sky, with an open indoor patio where I loved to have breakfast. Even though the house is from another century, it was updated in respect to its origin and with lot of taste. More work is under way to create a terrace on the roof as well as a bedroom - WOW, can't wait to go back. My room was the best in the house, just redone in blue, with beautiful stones on the walls, AC and modern ensuite bathroom, something impossible to find in Old Havana. In a country where so many things are missing, the very efficient Reymond is like a magician, he can find anything. His partner Raydel cook fabulous dinners, generous and tasteful, for 10CUP - the best deal in town. Elena, the very nice cleaning lady and Rocky the dog, add to this beautiful place where I felt like home.
After spending a week there, I went to Pinar Del Rio for another week and came back for my last night to La Casona di Obrapia with a friend who had been 6 times to Cuba. She was stunned by the place and said it was the most beautiful B&B she had seen in Cuba. And I beleive her!!!
