Just got back from a week trip through cuba and I have a few tips; things that I didn't see anywhere before we went (maybe I just wasn't looking properly).
First of all, if you are from the UK, your Maestro debit cards will not work in Cuba. You will need to get money out from the bank or western union (take your passport with you) from your Visa or MasterCard.
Definitely contact Jorge (his address is everywhere in the Cuba forum). I was a little bit wary, but he is 100% real and made our stay in Cuba completely hassle free. He was even available to drive us out Vinales on one day, and the amount of knowledge that man has about everything Cuban.... Let's just say that we learnt a lot!
You need at least 4 days in Havana - it is such a great city! The food is not very good, so don't expect too much. Definitely go to La Guarida for dinner... Amazing red snapper!
Driving in Cuba isn't a hassle, HOWEVER there are NO road sign anywhere!! You can stop and ask locals, who will always be very friendly (and a lot will speak a bit of english too), but it is hard to get around... Roads are bumpy, but not really a worry as there are hardly any cars on the road. Be aware that there are people on all the highways that are after a lift, even people in uniform. You do not have to stop for them.
Personally for me, I would not bother driving all the way to Ancon and Trinidad. Trinidad was nice and pretty, but a long drive just for that. Ancon is ok if you are into all inclusive type places, something that is definitely not me.
Prices of some things:
Taxi to/ from airport - 25CUC
Taxi in havana - 4 - 7CUC (depends on where you are going)
Parking (always park in a lot) - should be 1CUC. someone tried to charge us 5!!
Beer - anywhere from 1 to 3CUC - depends where you are
Anyway, I hope that some of these will be of use to someone. Definitely go to Cuba - it is such an amazing place!
