I just returned from Bonaire a few weeks ago. Loved the trip - diving, windsurfing, bike riding, sight seeing, dining experiences, & my accommodations were perfect for my active pace.
Over the years, I have stayed in numerous resorts - I have since recognized the fact that I do not belong with that type of traveler & I am not there long enough to warrant the expense. After exhausting review of local sights on Bonairetalk.com ,lonely planet, etc.
I came across Tropicana & Bonaire fun apartments - both owned & operated by Roland & Irene (the 2 nicest people I met on Bonaire).
There places are simple, clean, affordable, well located & secure.
Simple - because - I am extremely active - therefore was able to wash out my dive equipment in a nice wash basin - hang my stuff on there convenient racks - take a shower & go again - all w/o walking more than 25 feet. Most other places required a 10 minute walk from a communal parking lot. (1 place even supplied its guests w/ wheel barrows - to lug there stuff long distances. They also payed about 1/2 again more than me - but the wheel barrow was included - I think.
Clean & simple rooms - after witnessing my fellow dive buddies accommodations, I was staying in a 5 star vs. there 1 star.
The room I stayed in was set up perfectly for 1 or 2 persons + it had a small kitchen - for light cooking. (small stove, sink & refrigerator). I also had a nice little porch w/ a table & light that was surrounded by plants for privacy. There is also a T.V. w/ cable. (the little I used the internet - there is free access in the mall or you can rent time on a computer there) (phone - since I had sev'l. dive buddies & wanted to see what the wind was like on the southern part of the island - I rented a phone -which after I purchased 55 mins. - it was free = a lot cheaper than using your cell phone from home + I was able to call the states using a calling card - which was far cheaper & less hassle than 1 of the many phone booths that do not work for int'l.)
Secure - because there is a main gate that is secured at all times - I was able to hang my dive gear out on the racks & leave w/o any worries. (Across the street from me was a popular place for single divers that seemingly had many problems w/ theft. Since I dove w/ several of them - I was told that they could not leave there stuff unattended - so they had to sit & watch it dry / put it in a locker - where it would be safe - but would not get dry.)
The location was perfect, in respects to diving, eating (downtown Kralendijk) & everything else I did.
They even set me up w/ a vehicle & a dive shop for unlimited air. (Yellow submarine - great dive shop w/ several locations).
The clients this place had, while I was there, were low key, respectful & friendly people all around. There was also a mixed venue - older, middle & younger aged people from all different nationalities - yet very common dispositions.
After visiting many of the other resorts to dive - I decided that this was by far the best place - I could ever stay on this island.
