My husband and I stayed at the Caribbean Club for a week as part of a dive package through a dive-specific travel agent. The Caribbean Club is a little farther north on the island than most of the other hotels, but that really doesn't matter since you should have a rental truck anyway to enjoy the shore diving (which is phenomenal, by the way). Also nice was that one of our favorite dive sites was located just outside the hotel.

Our "deluxe" room had a separate bedroom / living room with a kitchenette and a porch with a hammock. Never used it much though as we spent most of the time out diving. Enjoyed the quiet and even made some friends with some neighborhood cats that frequent the area.

My one complaint (which was in another review) was that they used two sets of twin sheets on a double-sized bed. Kind of annoying, but it really was small compared to the perks. The restraunt / bar on the premises was great, we got a cooked-to-order breakfast included in our package each morning, the waitress soon came to know us by name. Also enjoyed a cold beer at the bar each night after a long day of diving.

The onsite dive operator, Hilltop Divers, is really a satellite of the larger Buddy Dive just down the road. Quite convienent, Buddy Dive was beyond great, with the free Nitrox upgrade and unlimited drive-through tank refills. Our last day there we also booked a mangrove kayaking tour through Buddy Dive, which I would also recommend.

“Good enough”

Caribbean Club Bonaire

Jan 26, 2008

When planning this Father and son trip I contacted about a dozen of the most recognized places and asked for the exact same thing ie. Room for 2 for a week ,inclusive car rental, breakfast, unlimited shore diving w/ nitrox, and 6 boat dives incl all taxes and fee.( a turnkey all inclusive bid). CCB was the one that answered completely and directly without having to ask a bunch of clarifying questions. And they charged what they said. No hidden costs. The room was ample w/ airco and kitchen was adequate for us. No oven or pots or pans. The fridge froze our water bottles for the next days use overnight (we didn't use a cooler) The beds had no top sheets and they were not changed. The towels were changed once during the week. While not as posh as someplaces, it was better than others. The dive shop was partnered with Buddy's so tanks were never an issue. We picked up or truck at the airport and dropped it off when we left. Easy. Breakfast was adequate. We felt that since we went for the diving and we didn't need a lot of luxury, this was good enough for us. We will return as we especially liked the location out of town. Nice and quiet and next to Oil Slick Leap. Really nice place to watch the sun set.

“Bring your own sheets and a mop!”

Looking for a quiet place to stay for your dive vacation? Good choice, as long as you don't mind cleaning your own room, bringing your own towels and mop! Might need a refrigerator too, as these can even chill water. Chances are, you'll never see the cleaning lady, so don't stay more than one night! No atmosphere, and drinks are twice as much at the bar as they are in town, even at the convenience store. Ceiling fans, while new and attractive, drone so loudly it feels like you are in an airplane hanger. Lots of construction going on too, great if you like diesel trucks and jackhammers!
We had to request sheets several times, as the king size bed was made up with twin sheets laid sideways. Two twin sheets, unfitted. Really. When we politely asked for more, they handed us some out of a random pile, and suggested we go try them. Took three tries, but finally got them to let me have a bigger sheet. Definitely how I planned to spend the evening! When the refrigerator couldn't even chill water in the freezer, we asked for some ice at the bar. They insisted that we pay for ice!

Please bear in mind that all travelers are not the same... That said, Bonaire rocks & the Caribbean Club is a killer deal for those of us who value being off the beaten path a bit. We only met the owner once, who was there for an in-house celebration featuring local dancers. Nice enough fellow, he was a Dutchman offering me some MacCallan 18yr. scotch for giving him some tips on courting the low-profile traveler. The real stars of the small hotel complex, however, were the management. As with most small hotels/ inns, respect is mutual. My dad & his girlfriend both are involved in their own B&Bs, so I know that high maintenance guests can take up a lot of one's time. What was great about the management [Sean (GB), Mar (Neth.), Sean's nephew, Danny & Mar's son, Jerome] was that they could always give good advice or point you to someone more knowledgeable. Good service, too. (A/C went out once-- fixed in 20 mins. Locked my keys in the bedroom-- solved in 5 mins.)
The layout is bewildering at first, as many small Caribbean complexes are, but beautiful trees & flowers lie around every corner. There's a nice bar next to a very clean & modern pool with deck chairs & cool breezes. The rooms are actually all apartments, almost like 1 story duplexes. We had a nice kitchen (forget about wasting time looking for a breakfast place & chewing up your precious daylight hours) where we stocked the fridge with beer & simple breakfast and picknicing foods. The water in Bonaire is desalinated & WAY better than any bottled water available on the island-- unexpected treat for water snobs. The apartment was decorated & furnished in a very simple yet clean manner, with a mixture of Ikea & local furniture and spotless, medium to large bathrooms. There was also a living room & large patio which we rarely used, because we were usually out. You get your own room safe (big plus) and we never heard rowdy hotel neighbors or kids or dogs. The hotel itself is about a 7 minute drive from town (Kralendijk) located on "Hilltop" but that never bothered me except once when I forgot to bring my $ to dinner...... (Girlfriend not happy.) It's just a short walk/ drive from some of the most scenic vistas on Bonaire. I have nothing but nice things to say about CCB (or Bonaire Caribbean Club) & staff. Soon their resident chef will be there, so you can eat & crash early if need be. As of 10/20/04, we paid $50/ night + tax, which we felt was definitely reasonable and will pay again next year when we take other members of the family there. Website: caribbeanclubbonaire Any other ?'s about CCB or Bonaire in general from the point of view of two 30-ish yr. olds who are travel geeks with culinary & adventure sports backgrounds are welcome. Salud.
