Just came back from a Scuba vacation and stayed at Captain Don's....From a Saturday to Saturday. The location of the resort is idyllic. Right on the water. Stayed in a deluxe ocean front junior suite (Room 28) which is was perfect since it was so close to the dive shop and the dock. The surrounding water is beautiful and was wonderful to hear from the terrace the splash of the waves. But let me give you a well rounded review to tell you what we liked and didn't like.
This was what you would expect. It was clean. Had a fridge and sink and enough storage for all your munchies. We ended up going to local supermarkete to get our fill of Beer rather than going though the bar or restaurant. The cleaning service was great and friendly. AC was ice cold, so we had to turn it down a bit at night, but that's a good problem to have. Shower was great, had dispensers for shampoo and body wash so we didn't need to bring our own. I don't know why since I always look shabby during a dive vacation, but I ended up using their hairdyer, so leave yours at home.
What I didn't like is that they charge $6 to use the safe. Granted, it's $6 for your entire stay, but I didn't like feeling I was being nickel and dimed to death for every amenity. Just add this to the cost of the hotel. It's more a psychological thing than anything else.
I also didn't like that I had to had my travel vouchers printed (I went though a Maduro travel). When we arrived on the Saturday, the front office asked for my vouchers which had the meal plan and the dive package on it. I sent them an email from their wife (present in every room) and asked them to print it out from their printer, but they said they couldn't until the Monday. I was like, you run a freaking 24 hour business, why can't you print on a weekend. In the end everything worked out fine, but it was an annoyance, especially on the first day. The front office staff was great and courteous, no problem with them.
2. Dive Operation:
24 hour shore diving which was great. They have BonPhoto on premises so we did a fluorescent nite dive which was well worth the experience. Alejandro from BonPhoto was phenomenal as a divemaster. The regular dive staff we were not thrilled about. The person who did the oritentation was not particuarly warm and fuzzy, unlike my dive experiences in other resorts and in other countries. The other divestaff were also not particularly friendly and they just hung around the dive shop. No good mornings. No no nothing. Just did their job and didn't seem interested in going out of their way in terms of customer service. They did smile during our last day of diving when we returned our weights. As if that final smile would garner them any generous tip (we are GENEROUS tippers). We didn't stiff them with a measley tip, but certainly we didn't feel that they deserved what they would have gotten. Trust me, we were not the only ones who felt that way. We spoke with other guests at the resort who had the same feeling. But we met another diver from BUddy Dive who was on our boat dive and she didn't like the staff at Capt Don's either. Her term for them was "arrogant'.
We signed up for four boat dives, ended up doing just three since we had more fun just taking the tanks in our truck and just exploring the island.
3. Rum Runners Restaurant
Nice staff. Great coffee. Loved their chicken quesdailla on the rare times I got it, but the selection is pretty Americana. Tasty though. The servers were excellent.
Breakfast buffet (included in our package) was standard fare. How can you go wrong with omelets, fruit, cereal, and bacon? It was just fine. But I found the heavier set guy who make our omelets very pleasant. Service with a smile.
So in short, would I stay here again. I would. But I think before I stay there again, I would try my hand at another resort for comparison.
